Chapter 1 - The Weight of Steel

The wrench didn’t crush Julian Sterling’s Italian leather shoe; it pinned it. It was a precise, calculated strike, dead center across the steel toe cap beneath the leather. The shockwave rattled Julian’s polished veneer down to his spine. For three seconds, the only sound inside Apex Motoring was the hiss of hydraulic lines and the frantic panting of a ten-year-old boy backed against a structural beam.
Julian looked down. His jaw worked silently. The heavy socket wrench stood upright, planted like an iron flag.
""Two million dollars,"" Leo repeated. His voice cracked with the breaking timber of an underfed child, but his hazel eyes were steady, unblinking, burning beneath grease smears. ""You told your client the twin-turbo setup was dialed in. You’re about to ship that car to Pebble Beach. And you completely ignored the misfire on cylinder seven.""
Julian stared, stunned into immobility. His polished Oxford was pinned to the epoxy floor. He slowly lifted his head, smoothing his designer tie. His brow furrowed in rage, but his voice emerged cold, surgical. ""Do you have any idea whose workshop you just contaminated, you little stray?""
""A shop run by a fraud who uses diagnostic tablets instead of his own ears,"" Leo retorted, chin tilted high.
Julian stepped back, deliberately kicking the wrench aside. It clattered loudly against the floor. He advanced on Leo, his shadow swallowing the boy whole. ""I am Julian Sterling. I built this empire. You are a homeless kid living off scraps from the dumpster behind bay four. You touched my flagship build.""
""I saved your life,"" Leo whispered, not backing down an inch. ""Crank that engine past six thousand revs, and the titanium valve stem snaps. It detonates the entire left block. You wouldn't just lose two million dollars. You’d kill whoever’s driving.""
Julian froze. His mind flashed back to the bench test forty minutes earlier. There had been a tiny, rhythmic tick. He had written it off as normal injector chatter.

Before Julian could answer, the security intercom on the wall buzzed with an urgent tone. A receptionist’s panicked voice cut through: ""Mr. Sterling? Mr. Vance is coming up the lift. He brought his private security. He wants to hear the engine start right now.""
Julian’s color drained instantly. He looked at the gleaming black hypercar, then at the dirty boy who held the truth in his bare hands.
