Chapter 2 - The Sound of Thunder

""Hide in the back,"" Julian hissed, grabbing Leo by the collar of his faded grey shirt.
""No,"" Leo said, twisting out of his grip with the slippery agility of an alley cat. ""You lock me in the tool shed, you don’t find the burr. Then when Vance turns the key, the car burns, and you blame me anyway.""
Footsteps echoed from the service elevator. Heavy boots, expensive cologne, and the distinct clink of gold cufflinks announced Marcus Vance. Vance wasn’t just a billionaire; he was an investor with ties to underworld logistics, a man who didn't accept apologies, only perfection or ruined careers.
Vance entered, flanked by two towering men in charcoal suits. ""Julian,"" Vance drawled, scanning the immaculate floor. ""I hear my track monster is prepped. Tell me she purrs.""
Julian straightened his jacket, planting himself between Vance and the kid. ""She’s immaculate, Marcus. We just need to run one final calibration—""
""I didn't wire three million upfront for calibrations,"" Vance interrupted, stepping past him toward the black hypercar. ""I came to hear the beast breathe.""
Vance pulled an engraved brass key fob from his pocket. Julian lunged forward, hand outstretched. ""Wait! Marcus, don't—""
The boy stepped out into the open. ""Turn it over, and you'll throw a rod before the oil pressure even stabilizes.""
The room plunged into dead silence. Vance stopped mid-stride, turning his sharp, hawk-like gaze down at Leo. He looked at the grease on the child's cheek, the torn cuffs of his denim jeans, and the worn leather boots.
""And who is this grease monkey?"" Vance asked, amused yet dangerously quiet. ""Did Sterling hire junior mechanics to lower overhead?""
""He's trespassing,"" Julian snapped desperately. ""Security, get him out—""
""Hold on,"" Vance raised a manicured finger. The guards paused. Vance knelt down so he was eye-level with Leo. ""Kid. You know what engine is under that carbon hood?""
""A bespoke 4.0-liter flat-plane crank V8,"" Leo answered instantly, his voice leveling into pure technical clarity. ""Hand-built aluminum block. Twin ceramic ball-bearing turbos. You set the clearance on the exhaust valves too tight by two-thousandths of an inch. When the heat expands the valve stem, it'll bind in the guide. If you turn that key, you weld the head.""
Vance’s amused smile vanished. He stood up slowly and locked eyes with Julian, whose face had gone chalk-white.
""Julian,"" Vance murmured, his voice deadly low. ""Did you verify valve clearances manually?""
May you like
Julian swallowed hard. ""The automated scan said—""
""The boy asked you a question with a wrench earlier, Julian,"" Vance said. ""Now I'm asking you. Turn the key. Prove the kid wrong.""
