Safety, however, proved to be an internal battle as much as an external one. During her first week at Willow Creek, Grace jumped at every loud noise—the sudden slam of a car door, a raised voice in the hallway, or the deep rumble of thunder over the hills. Her body had been conditioned to expect danger at every turn. Mark had started leaving cryptic, chilling voicemail messages on her old phone before Sarah insisted she switch to a pre-paid burn phone and disable all location services.
Through late-night conversations with Clara on the porch, Grace began the painful process of unspooling her memories. She realized how subtly the isolation had begun—how Mark had slowly distanced her from her family, her career, and eventually her self-worth, until she felt completely dependent on his approval. "Trauma makes you believe you earned the pain," Clara gently reminded her one evening as they watched the twilight settle over the orchard. "Healing starts when you realize you were only ever a victim of someone else's storm."
