Chapter 4 - Safe Harbor

By noon the following day, Pastor Thomas had arranged for Claire’s transport across state lines to St. Jude’s Haven, a confidential sanctuary for women fleeing domestic violence and coercion. Located in a nondescript valley surrounded by pine orchards, the refuge looked like an ordinary sprawling farmhouse, guarded by discreet security measures and an ironclad pledge of anonymity.

The director of the haven was Evelyn Vance, an attorney who had spent three decades fighting corporate and high-profile abusers. Evelyn did not mince words. When Claire sat in her office, nursing her bruised cheek while Evelyn reviewed photographs of the injury, the older lawyer’s face set into hard lines.

"Eleanor Sterling is a board member for three major hospital networks and controls half the municipal judges in Oakridge," Evelyn stated plainly, closing the camera shutter. "Her son Julian is a spineless heir apparent who signs whatever his mother slides across the mahogany table. They intended to take your baby the minute you delivered at Oakridge General."

"How could a hospital let that happen?" Claire asked, her voice tight with disbelief.

"Because Eleanor would have produced a signed voluntary relinquishment of parental rights, backed by Marcus’s testimony that you were unstable and fled into the night," Evelyn explained. "With your background having aged out of foster care, they would have painted you as an unfit vagrant. By the time legal aid intervened, the adoption would have been finalized in a closed probate court."

Claire felt a cold sweat prickle her neck. The sheer methodical wickedness of Eleanor’s plan made her stomach turn. "I don't have the money to fight them, Evelyn. I have twenty-four dollars and an unfinished social work degree."

Evelyn leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the desk. Her gray eyes burned with a steady, reassuring fire. "You don't need money here, Claire. You need time, courage, and patience. The law has loopholes, but it also has steel foundations when handled by people who aren't afraid of bank accounts. You stay here. You carry this baby to term in peace. Let them think you vanished into thin air."

"What about Julian?" Claire asked, the lingering ember of heartbreak still aching in her ribs.

"Julian made his choice when he told you his mother only meant to scare you," Evelyn said bluntly. "He chose his inheritance over his child. Now, you must choose to survive."

That night, for the first time in nine months, Claire slept behind a locked door where no one could enter without her permission.
