Chapter 9 - The Anatomy Of Cowardice

Following the court hearing, the Sterling empire began to unravel with terrifying speed. The leaked audio recording hit local news outlets before evening, sparking public protests outside Eleanor’s charitable foundations. Corporate partners quietly suspended contracts, and the Vance-Caldwell family issued a terse, one-sentence press release announcing the immediate termination of Victoria’s engagement to Julian.
Late that evening, Julian stood on the steps of St. Jude’s Haven, having followed Evelyn Vance’s car through three counties in a desperate attempt to find Claire. The facility’s security stopped him at the gate, but Claire agreed to speak with him for five minutes in the visitor’s courtyard, under the watchful eye of two security guards.
Julian looked broken. His tailored shirt was crumpled, his eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking in his pockets.
"Claire," he choked out, taking a step toward her before the guards stiffened, prompting him to stop. "Claire, please. You have to listen to me. I never wanted Marcus to hit you. You know that. I was just trying to protect our family’s standing. My mother... she controls all the trusts. She threatened to cut me off completely."
Claire stood five feet away, her arms folded across her chest. She looked at him not with anger, but with an overwhelming sense of pity that cut him deeper than contempt.
"You were willing to let another man strike your pregnant wife because you were afraid of losing your allowance, Julian," she said, her voice quiet and even.
"I can change!" he pleaded, falling to his knees on the gravel path. "I’ll testify against my mother. I’ll give you everything. Just let me see my daughter. Let me be a father."
"You don't want to be a father, Julian," Claire said softly. "You want an absolution. You want to hold a child for ten minutes to prove to yourself that you aren't the monster everyone is watching on the evening news."
"She’s my blood!" Julian wept.
"Blood is an accident of biology," Claire answered. "Parenthood is a choice made through sacrifice, protection, and love. On the night Hannah needed a father to step between her and violence, you stood by and told me to sign her away."
She turned toward the door of the cottage.

"Claire, wait!" he shouted, tears streaming down his face. "What is her name? Just tell me her name!"
Claire paused at the threshold. She looked back over her shoulder, her hazel eyes steady as the winter stars. "Her name is Hannah Grace. And she will grow up knowing that her mother was never afraid of you."
