Chapter 8 - The Clinic on 22nd Street

St. Jude’s Community Health Center smelled of bleach, boiled coffee, and overused heaters. In a cramped corner bay behind a faded blue curtain, seventeen-year-old Mateo lay propped against thin hospital pillows. His skin had the grayish, translucent hue of advanced renal failure, his dark eyes sunken yet remarkably clear.

When the curtain slid back, Mateo’s face lit up with a fragile smile. "Maya... you came."

Maya rushed to the bedside, dropping to her knees and burying her face in his thin blanket. "I’m here, Mateo. I’m here. Everything is going to be okay."

Behind her, Damian stepped into the room, carrying one of the heavy black cases from the SUV. The attending resident, an exhausted young woman in wrinkled blue scrubs, hurried over with a clipboard, ready to deliver another bureaucratic dismissal. "Excuse me, visiting hours are—"

She stopped dead when Damian set the case on the stainless-steel examination table and popped the latches. Inside lay a brand-new, medical-grade Vance dialyzer, complete with sealed pediatric lines and hospital-grade filters.

"My name is Damian Vance," he said, handing the physician a laminated authorization card from his wallet. "This unit is donated directly to this facility under the Vance Humanitarian Access Program. Patient Mateo Ramos is enrolled under a permanent private endowment covering all operational and transplant-prep costs."

The doctor stared at the card, then at the machine, her jaw slightly slack. "Mr. Vance... we don't have the paperwork for this."

"The paperwork was filed with your chief of medicine twenty minutes ago," Damian said, his voice leaving no room for debate. "Prep him for a four-hour clearance cycle. Now."
