Chapter 15 - The Vance Vow

The recovery suite smelled of cedar and clean sea air. Roman sat propped against a bank of pillows, bandages wrapped tight around his torso under a fresh black silk shirt. His face was drawn and pale, but the predatory sharp edge in his eyes had softened into something profound and uncharted.
Nora walked in slowly, closing the door behind her. She looked exhausted, her auburn hair falling loose around her shoulders, wearing clean white clothes provided by the compound staff.
“She took the marrow,” Nora said, her voice quiet. “Her white blood cell count is already starting to normalize. The doctors say she’ll make a full recovery.”
Roman looked out the panoramic window toward the calm, endless sea. “I know. My chief hematologist gave me the hourly report.”
Nora crossed the room, stopping beside his bed. “Why did you do it, Roman? You could have taken the canister and let Petrov kill me. You didn't need to risk your life on that roof.”
Roman turned his gaze to her, his dark eyes unwavering. “When you walked into my bedroom yesterday, you said you had someone more important than me to keep alive. I’ve spent twenty years surrounded by people who would sell my soul for a stack of hundreds. Nobody ever stood in front of me with nothing to lose except a child’s life.”
He reached to the bedside table, picking up a leather folder embossed with the Vance family crest, and pushed it across the counterpane toward her.
Nora opened it. Inside were clean legal deeds: full ownership of the coastal compound, an offshore trust fund established in Mia’s name, and legal guardianship papers naming Nora as the sole trustee of the entire Vance maritime empire.
“What is this?” she breathed, looking at him in disbelief.
“A shield,” Roman answered softly. “Petrov’s death will trigger a war across five syndicates. The council will come for everything with my name on it. But they can’t touch a trust held by a mother protecting her child.” He reached out, his scarred hand covering hers on the folder. “Stay here, Nora. Let me protect what we both bled to save.”

Before Nora could answer, the door swung open, and Marco stepped inside, his expression rigid.
“Boss. We have a problem,” Marco said, holding up a satellite phone. “Viktor Petrov’s body wasn't in the morgue when the state police arrived.”"
