Chapter 1 - The Shattered Altar

The white satin flowers scattered violently across the polished marble floor. Whispers swept through the rows of high-society guests like dry wind across a wheat field. Marcus stayed frozen on his knees, his palms pressed flat against the chilled stone. His breath was ragged, his vision tunneling until all he could see was the pristine black polish of Arthur Sterling’s shoes. Arthur was not just wealthy; he was the reclusive titan behind Apex Global, a corporate phantom whose ruthless acquisitions destroyed fortunes overnight.

Tanya stood on the platform, her hand still raised from flinging the bouquet, her chest heaving against the sculpted fabric of her designer gown. Her carefully orchestrated public humiliation of her sister had unraveled in a split second. She had invited hundreds of influential peers specifically to mock Maya’s modest life, to parade Maya’s supposedly broke husband as a cautionary tale of squandered beauty. Now, looking at Arthur Sterling standing beside Maya, Tanya felt her throat close up.

Arthur did not look at the guests. He reached out with one broad hand, his long, scarred fingers gently resting against Maya’s bare shoulder. Maya leaned into his touch, her dark eyes still glistening with fresh tears, but the sorrow had vanished, replaced by an unsettling, quiet stillness.

""Get up, Marcus,"" Arthur’s voice was low, resonant, carrying effortless authority that instantly silenced the murmuring crowd. ""Apex does not employ men who bow before anyone other than their duties.""

Marcus scrambled to his feet, stumbling backward, his face drained of every drop of color. ""Mr... Mr. Sterling... I had no idea... she said—Tanya told me—""

""Tanya told you many things,"" Arthur said evenly, his dark gaze finally shifting toward the bride on the stage. ""Just as she told the board that your division’s quarterly shortfall was an accounting anomaly.""

Tanya stepped forward, the microphone trembling in her grip as feedback shrieked through the speakers. ""Arthur? What is this nonsense? Marcus is a rising director! This is my wedding day, Maya! Who did you hire to play this ridiculous trick?""

Maya gently brushed the remaining tears from her lashes. She looked at her elder sister not with rage, but with profound pity. ""He isn't hired, Tanya. We've been married for three years.""

Arthur reached inside his tailored breast pocket, not to draw a weapon, but to pull out a slim, gold-embossed black envelope. He extended it toward Marcus, whose hands trembled violently as he took it.

""A wedding gift for your union,"" Arthur remarked with an icy smile. ""A full forensic audit of your offshore accounts, signed by federal regulators an hour ago.""

Marcus dropped the envelope as if it were on fire. Before anyone could react, four men in dark suits stepped out from behind the towering floral walls, badges gleaming beneath the warm fairy lights.
