BLOODLINE IN THE SHADOWS

The steady hum of the penthouse climate control did little to ease the suffocating stillness in the room. Damian Vance adjusted the cuff of his charcoal jacket, his knuckles whitening as he looked down at the silk-covered bed. Elena lay unconscious, her breathing shallow and ragged. The faint purplish bloom across her left cheekbone was a testament to violence that had come far too close. Next to her, cradled inside a swaddle of pure white cashmere, slept a newborn whose tiny fists trembled with every small breath.

At the threshold stood Mateo, breathing through a broken nose. The tactical operative looked as though he had clawed his way through hell just to deliver them to the safehouse.

""The third convoy vehicle took the direct impact near the river crossing,"" Mateo murmured, keeping his voice beneath a whisper so the child wouldn’t startle. ""Her waters broke during the ambush. She fought them off in the wreck, took the wheel, and severed our tail before collapsing at the south perimeter gate.""

Damian bent down, his hand hovering inches above the infant’s forehead. The boy had his mother’s high cheekbones, but even in the quiet of sleep, the faint furrow between the child's brows carried Damian's undeniable bloodline. A lethal warmth tightened in Damian’s chest. For six months, the syndicates had assumed Elena was dead, hidden in the European countryside where no syndicate reach could touch her. Yet someone had leaked the route.

""She protected him alone,"" Damian said softly, though the calm in his tone was far more dangerous than fury. ""Where are the men who followed her?""

""Eliminated three at the docks,"" Mateo replied, wiping a trace of dried blood from his jaw. ""The fourth took a bullet to the chest, but lived long enough to speak.""
