Chapter 6 - The Convoy in the Mist

By four in the morning, a relentless rain had turned the Blackwood Highway into a black mirror. Two armored SUVs moved in tandem, sweeping through the mountain switchbacks fifty miles outside the city limits. Elena sat in the back of the lead vehicle, holding Leo against her chest beneath a heavy wool coat, while Damian watched the rear mirrors, his assault rifle resting across his knees.
The radio crackled with static before Sophia’s voice came through the encrypted link from the chase car. ""We have a tail. Two black sedans without headlights, matching our speed half a mile back.""
""Julian's men?"" Damian asked, checking the magazine of his weapon.
""Worse,"" Sophia responded. ""The plates are tactical ghost-tags. Foreign mercenaries. Looks like Julian's Bratva partners want their guarantee delivered tonight.""
""Mateo, punch the accelerator,"" Damian commanded. ""We cross the old suspension bridge before they close the distance.""
The heavy SUV surged forward, its tires biting into the wet asphalt as the engine roared. But as they crested the final ridge before the bridge, twin high-beams suddenly flared on the opposite side of the chasm.

A massive flatbed truck was parked dead across the bridge’s narrow entrance, blocking the road completely.
From behind them, gunfire erupted, shattering the rear window of Sophia’s car into a cascade of glittering fragments.
