BLOODLINE OF ASHES / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Final Dividend

Julian didn't look up from his daughter’s chest.

"One... two... three," Julian whispered, gently depressing the rubber ventilation bulb with two fingers, keeping the breath of life flowing into Maya's tiny lungs. His left arm was completely numb, blood pooling beneath his torn coat on the wet deck, but his right hand was steady as an anvil.

"Step away from them, Marcus," Claire said, rising slowly to her feet, placing her body directly between the barrel of the gun and the child.

Marcus laughed through bloody teeth, the rain washing crimson streaks down his designer trench coat. "You really think you're one of us, girl? You think putting on a brave face makes you a Sterling? You're a stain on the ledger. Arthur knew it. Victoria knew it. And I am going to erase you just like I should have thirty years ago."

"Look at me, Marcus," Claire said, her voice dropping into a steady, commanding register that was utterly devoid of fear.

She reached up and slowly pulled back the sleeve of her yellow weather jacket, exposing the strawberry-red crescent birthmark on her wrist.

Under the glare of the halogen deck lights, Marcus’s eyes locked onto the mark.

For a single heartbeat, the madness in his eyes flickered. A memory—cold, distant, and undeniably human—flashed across his face.

"I don't care about your money, Marcus," Claire said quietly. "I don't care about your foundation, your towers, or your Swiss accounts. But this baby has my blood. And you will not touch her."

"It doesn't matter," Marcus snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "None of it matters!"

Before his hammer could fall, a blinding, multi-million-candlepower searchlight tore through the rain, illuminating the entire deck of The Sovereign in a stark, blinding white glare.

A voice like rolling thunder erupted from the darkness through a military-grade LRAD acoustic system:

"THIS IS THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD CUTTER SENECA! DROP YOUR WEAPON IMMEDIATELY AND STEP AWAY FROM THE PASSENGERS! DROP THE WEAPON OR BE FIRED UPON!"

Through the blinding beam of light, two black tactical rigid-inflatable boats slammed against both sides of the yacht, boarding hooks biting deep into the fiberglass rails. Half a dozen federal tactical operators in full maritime combat gear swarmed over the bulwarks, submachine guns raised, their laser designators painting red dots across Marcus's chest.

"Drop it! Now!"

Marcus looked at the red dots dancing on his cashmere coat. He looked at Claire, standing resolute before the dying child. He looked at Julian, whose rhythmic, gentle fingers never stopped squeezing the tiny rubber bulb.

"One... two... three," Julian whispered in the dark.

A bitter, broken laugh escaped Marcus's lips. He didn't drop the gun. With a final, desperate snarl of defiance, he turned the weapon toward the searchlight beam.

The night exploded with three deafening, synchronized cracks.

Marcus was lifted off his feet by the kinetic impact, thrown backward across the wet teak, his body crashing through the shattered salon glass before settling into absolute, motionless silence.

Tactical operators secured the deck in seconds. A Coast Guard flight surgeon in a red flight suit slid down the boarding ladder, carrying a specialized portable transport incubator with full life-support capability.

"Get her in! Now!" Claire directed, her hands guiding the transfer with razor-sharp efficiency.

As the medical team secured Maya inside the warm, humming unit, the surgeon checked the monitor.

"Heart rate is one-forty," the surgeon called out. "Oxygen saturation ninety-four percent! She’s breathing, people! Let’s get this bird to the trauma center!"

Julian collapsed backward against the salt-encrusted deck, the world spinning in dark, beautiful circles.

May you like

Claire knelt beside him, pressing a sterile trauma dressing against his bleeding shoulder, tears finally streaming freely down her face. "You did it, Julian. She's alive. Maya is alive."

Julian closed his eyes, the roar of the storm fading into the background, replaced by the memory of Elena’s voice. "Take me to my wife," he whispered.
