Chapter 5 - Shadow in Room Twelve

Julian sprinted down the stairwell, ignoring the burn in his thighs, taking four steps at a time. The hospital elevator was too slow, the reality too fragile. Someone was inside Elena’s room.
Victoria was in a police holding cell—or was she? Money in this city was a skeleton key that unlocked municipal doors in minutes. If Victoria hadn't been processed, or if her brother Marcus had pulled strings through the police commissioner’s office, Elena was a sitting duck in an unmonitored corner of the intensive care ward.
He burst through the heavy fire doors onto the third floor.
The ICU hallway was dim, illuminated only by floor-level safety lights and the flickering amber alarms above Room 12. A lone nurse was sprawled awkwardly on the floor near the supply cart, groaning, holding the back of her bleeding skull.
Julian didn't stop to help her. He threw his entire body weight against the door of Room 12.
Inside, the shadows were deep. The bedside monitors were screaming in cacophony, their digital lines plunging toward flat zero. Standing beside the bed was a figure dressed in sterile white hospital orderly scrubs, a disposable surgical mask covering the lower half of his face.
In the man’s gloved hand was a massive, twenty-milliliter plastic syringe, its needle buried deep into the primary IV port leading directly into the central line in Elena’s neck.
"Get away from her!" Julian roared.
He launched himself across the narrow space, tackling the intruder around the waist. Both men crashed into the rolling medication cart, sending vials of potassium chloride, saline bags, and stainless-steel trays clattering violently across the floor.
The attacker was muscular, built like an ironworker, fighting with silent, professional brutality. He drove a gloved elbow hard into Julian’s ribs, cracking bone and knocking the air entirely from his chest. Julian wheezed, his vision flashing white with blinding pain, but he refused to release his hold on the man's wrist, twisting the syringe away from Elena's bed.
"Who sent you?!" Julian snarled, blood filling his mouth where his teeth had cut his inner lip. "Was it Marcus? Was it my mother?!"
The man didn't waste breath on words. He grabbed a heavy stainless-steel oxygen regulator from the floor and swung it upward, catching Julian across the cheekbone.
Julian’s grip failed. He collapsed against the edge of Elena’s bed, his head ringing like a cracked church bell, warm blood sheeting down the side of his face.
The intruder scrambled to his feet, ripping his torn mask down to breathe. Julian caught only a fleeting glance under the harsh emergency light: a jagged scar across the man's throat and cold, dead eyes that showed neither panic nor hatred. Pure mercenary detachment.
The man turned to finish Elena, raising the heavy oxygen regulator to crush her skull.
"Hey!"
A sharp, deafening blast echoed through the room.
Claire stood in the doorway, gripping a heavy CO2 fire extinguisher with both hands. She depressed the lever, unleashing a thick, blinding cloud of frozen white chemical powder straight into the assassin's face.
The man choked, stumbling backward, dropping the iron tool. Through the swirling white blizzard of chemicals, he realized his window had closed. Code Blue alarms were already ringing down the hall, accompanied by the thundering boots of hospital security.
With a low curse, the man turned, shoved open the emergency fire exit door beside the window, and vanished into the darkness of the exterior fire escape.

Julian pulled himself up by the hospital bed's rail, coughing violently through the chemical fog, his trembling hands reaching for Elena's throat.
Her skin was turning a terrifying, mottled blue. The clear IV tubing was filled not with saline, but with a dark, oily, amber liquid that was already flowing steadily down toward the catheter in her vein.
