Chapter 1 - The Pet Bowl

The antique grandfather clock chimed three, its heavy tick echoing off the marble foyer. On the hardwood floor, four-year-old Lily choked back tears, her tiny fingers clutching the beige carpet. Beside her stood a silver pet food bowl filled with soggy leftovers. Julianna, draped in an immaculate champagne tweed suit, looked down with pure contempt. “If you act like an stray animal, you eat like one,” she hissed.
Standing behind her was Richard, Julianna’s ambitious nephew, grinning smugly as he leaned against the mahogany doorframe. Next to him, Elena, the newly hired maid, held out a smartphone. Her hands trembled, but the lens was focused on the little girl’s humiliation. Suddenly, the front doors burst open. Julianna froze.
Alexander Vance stepped into the hall. At seventy-one, the billionaire patriarch commanded an aura of sheer lethal power. Dressed in a bespoke navy three-piece suit, his granite jaw tightened as his gaze swept across the floor. He saw the bowl, the tears on his granddaughter’s cheeks, and the smirk fading from Richard’s face. Lily gasped out, “Daddy…”
Without a word, Alexander bent down and scooped Lily into his massive left arm, cradling her head against his broad chest. Richard made the fatal mistake of stepping forward with a scoff, thinking Alexander was frail. Alexander pivoted on his heel and unleashed a brutal sidekick into Richard’s chest. The impact hurled Richard through the air, crashing through a carved wooden cabinet filled with vintage architectural scrolls.
Julianna lunged toward them in fury, screaming, “How dare you!” Alexander didn’t even flinch; his right backhand whipped across the air, striking her cheek with a resounding crack that sent her tumbling onto the Persian rug. The dining trays rattled and crashed.
Walking over slowly with Lily held safely away, Alexander picked up the metal pet bowl from the floor. He dropped it hard before Julianna’s bleeding lip. “Enjoy your meal,” he said, his voice like grinding stones.

Julianna touched her swelling cheek, tears of sheer rage leaking from her eyes. “You old bastard... your son Marcus died in that crash six months ago! You gave me power of attorney! You cannot touch me!”
Alexander pulled a folded parchment from his inside pocket and dropped it onto her lap. It was stamped with a royal blue federal seal. “I didn’t just return to bury my son,” he whispered softly. “I returned to reclaim the throne—and your signature on his will was forged.”
