Chapter 11 - The Hammer Falls

The morning sun beat down brightly upon the former Vance estate, but the mood was far from peaceful. At the front entrance, high-powered yellow excavators, bulldozers, and demolition cranes lined the driveway like mechanical beasts waiting for a feast. Dozens of construction workers stood at attention, hard hats under their arms, awaiting orders.
Elena stood on the terrace where she had once begged for mercy, wearing a simple cream trench coat and sunglasses. Beside her stood Evelyn Cross, holding the deed of demolition and public redevelopment.
Reporters from major media networks gathered behind a roped-off security perimeter on the lawn, their cameras trained on Elena.
"Miss Sterling!" a reporter called out. "Is it true that this entire five-hundred-million-dollar property is being demolished to build a non-profit pediatrics research center?"
Elena walked to the microphone set up on the patio, looking directly into the cameras.
"For years, this place was a fortress of vanity, cruelty, and deceit," Elena spoke clearly, her voice echoing across the courtyard. "Today, we tear down that darkness. Every brick that was bought with stolen money will be cleared away. In its place, we will build a haven where mothers and children will always find warmth, safety, and care."
She turned toward the operator of the lead demolition vehicle and gave a firm, simple nod.
The giant steel crane swung its heavy wrecking ball backward, then released it with a thunderous roar. The massive iron sphere crashed directly into the ornate stone pillars flanking the front entrance, shattering them into clouds of white dust and concrete fragments.
The crowd cheered, and shutters clicked madly.
Watching the opulent mansion crumble before her eyes, Elena felt a tremendous weight lift from her shoulders. The nightmare that had trapped her for three years was turning to dust.
Suddenly, her head of security, Lucas, rushed toward her, whispering urgently into his earpiece before leaning close to Elena.
"Miss Sterling, we have an emergency," Lucas muttered, keeping his voice strictly private. "The convoy transporting Victoria Vance to the federal holding facility was ambushed on Route 9."

Elena’s breath hitched. "Ambushed? Was she killed?"
"No," Lucas answered, his jaw tightening grimly. "Her transport was hit with thermite explosives. The guards were incapacitated, and Victoria Vance was extracted alive."
