Chapter 13 - The Net Closes

Over the next four weeks, the Sterling security perimeter became an impenetrable fortress. Elena stayed within the estate grounds, surrounded by top-tier medical staff and elite private security. Despite the looming threat, she refused to cower. Instead, she spent her days directing the reconstruction project of the pediatric center and actively learning the operations of the Sterling conglomerate alongside her father.
She was no longer the fragile, broken girl who begged for warmth on a wet patio. Her gaze had become decisive, her posture proud, and her mind razor-sharp.
One evening, as rain tapped against the bulletproof glass of the study, Arthur reviewed financial transaction reports with a frown.
"Marcus has surfaced," Arthur said, turning a monitor toward Elena. "A dummy corporation linked to a Swiss bank just purchased fifty percent of the deep-water harbor logistics terminals on our southern shipping channel."
Elena examined the transaction routes. "He is trying to choke our trade line. If he controls that harbor, he can disrupt thirty percent of Sterling's maritime imports."
"Exactly," Arthur nodded approvingly. "He is trying to provoke a financial response to draw our executive team out of the city. He expects me to travel to the port authority to sign an emergency injunction."
Elena leaned forward, tracing the shipping coordinates on the map. "He expects you, Father. But what if the person who shows up isn't you?"
Arthur looked at his daughter, his eyes widening slightly. "Elena, absolutely not. You are in your eighth month. You are not putting yourself in danger."
"Marcus believes I am still the terrified, submissive wife who ran away from a garden hose," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a chilling resolve. "He thinks I am weak. That is his greatest miscalculation. If he wants a meeting with the Sterling family, let us give him one—on our terms."
Arthur studied his daughter’s face for a long moment, seeing in her the exact fire that had made him the most feared man on the continent decades ago. A slow, proud smile crossed his face.

"Lucas," Arthur spoke into his intercom. "Prepare our southern fleet. It seems my daughter is going to war."
Late that night, an encrypted message was transmitted directly to Marcus Vance’s private terminal: The heiress will meet you at Pier 42 at midnight. Come claim your debt, or stay a rat in the dark.
