Chapter 1 - The Broken Heir

The private suite at St. Jude’s Maternity Wing reeked of expensive perfume, sterile alcohol, and unadulterated fear. Julian lay crumpled in the faux-leather armchair, his chest heaving beneath a rumpled Tom Ford suit. He clutched his bruised collarbone where Salvatore “Sal” Moretti’s hand had landed like a hammer. White paper cups and shattered plastic trays littered the polished linoleum around his designer loafers.
Sal didn't look back at him. Standing six-foot-two in his custom midnight-navy three-piece, the patriarch adjusted his cuffs. A solid gold Rolex glinted under the fluorescent panels. Behind him stood Frank and Marco, two stone-faced enforcers whose bulges beneath their jackets left no mystery regarding their profession.
Sal looked down into the acrylic bassinet. The infant, wrapped tight in sterile hospital linen, let out a soft whimper. Sal’s weathered, scarred hand reached down, his calloused thumb gently brushing the baby’s rosy cheek. The warmth of the newborn seemed to cut through the freezing tension of the room.
""Look at him,"" Sal muttered, his gravelly voice vibrating off the walls. ""A boy. Not even an hour old, and you were ready to ship him off like contraband.""
Elena backed into the corner, her fingers digging into the edge of the granite vanity until her knuckles turned snow-white. Her eyes darted from her father to Julian, terrified of what was about to spill. ""Dad... please. You don’t know everything. We had an arrangement.""
""An arrangement?"" Sal turned slowly, his piercing eyes narrowing into twin slits of steel. He fixed his gaze onto the trembling man in the armchair. ""Who is waiting downstairs, Julian? And don't make me ask twice. My patience left this room five minutes ago.""
Julian swallowed hard, his throat clicking dryly. He tried to muster the swagger he normally used across corporate boardrooms, but looking into the eyes of a man who had built an underworld empire from nothing shattered his bravado completely. ""It's... it's the Varga family,"" Julian rasped, wiping sweat from his forehead. ""They’re at the underground loading dock. A black Mercedes van.""
Sal’s jaw tightened, muscle ticking beneath his trimmed gray beard. The Vargas. Blood enemies from across the river, men who dealt in human collateral. ""You offered my bloodline as collateral for your bad debts?""
""They were going to kill me, Sal!"" Julian cried out, pointing an accusing finger toward Elena. ""She knew! She agreed to give him up so we could disappear!""
Elena gasped, shaking her head violently, tears finally spilling over her mascara. ""No! That's a lie! Dad, he threatened to—""
Sal held up one single finger, cutting her off instantly. The room plunged into dead silence.

Sal stepped to the window, peering through the vertical blinds into the rain-slicked courtyard below. At the basement ramp, headlights flashed three times in the dark. Sal’s radio chirped on Frank’s shoulder.
""Boss,"" the walkie-talkie hissed with static. ""The van downstairs just pulled out two automatic rifles. They aren't waiting for a trade. They're coming up.""
