Chapter 4 - The Lower Catacombs

Darkness swallowed Elena as the stone panel sealed shut behind her, cutting off the deafening roar of the firefight. The only sound was the raspy, rhythmic panting of Titan, who had slipped into the stairwell right behind her before the entrance closed.

“Julian!” Elena hammered her fist against the seamless stone. Nothing moved. There was no latch, no digital keypad, only smooth, ancient masonry.

Titan bumped his snout against her knee, whining softly. His massive presence was the only thing anchoring her galloping heart. She pulled her phone from her pocket and switched on the flashlight. The narrow staircase descended steeply into darkness, damp air carrying the scent of moss, iron, and centuries-old earth.

“Come on, boy,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Let’s find this safe room.”

They moved slowly down the slick stairs. Step by step, the sounds of battle above faded into dull, muffled thumps. The architecture changed as they descended; the modern reinforcement gave way to dry-laid stone arches dating back centuries. This was not merely a modern bunker; it was a forgotten catacomb system.

At the bottom of the third flight, the stairs opened into an arched stone vault. In the center of the room sat a steel reinforced door with a digital keypad and an old brass keyhole—matching the exact serpentine design of the key hanging around her neck.

Elena stepped toward it, her breath catching in her throat. She gripped the silver key, ready to fit it into the lock, when Titan suddenly let out a sharp, lung-shattering bark.

The dog did not face the vault door. He was spun around, staring into the dark shadows of a secondary tunnel leading toward the estate’s drainage canals.

Elena swung her phone’s light beam toward the darkness.

Two silhouettes stood in the beam, dressed in black combat uniforms devoid of insignia. Both held silenced submachine guns aimed directly at her chest.

“Hands where I can see them, Miss Vance,” a voice rasped through a balaclava. “Drop the key, and the hound lives.”

Titan snarled, the sound vibrating the very walls of the catacomb. Elena froze, the silver key burning like ice against her skin.
