Chapter 7 - The Choice in the Dark

The cold, mechanical hum of the backup batteries began to whine, its pitch climbing into a shrill shriek that rattled the stone vault. A sickly sweet smell, faint but distinct, began to seep from the overhead vents—almond and iron. Cyanide.

“Drop the gun, Julian,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous register she didn’t know she possessed. Her fingers curled into tight fists. “You leave Titan down here, and you leave me down here too.”

Julian stared at her through the crimson strobe light, his face pale from blood loss. For a long, terrifying second, the barrel of his weapon remained pointed at the floor between them. Then, with a curt flick of his wrist, he holstered the weapon.

“You have your father’s stubbornness,” Julian muttered, lunging forward and smashing the glass casing of the display with his elbow. He snatched the thick, leather-bound ledger and shoved it into an inner pocket of his shredded coat. “I was never planning on shooting the dog, Elena. I was preparing to shoot the vent shaft behind you.”

Before she could speak, Julian raised his pistol and fired three rapid shots directly into the ceiling grating. The heavy steel vent buckled, collapsing downward in a shower of sparks and plaster, followed by a rush of pressurized, unadulterated cold night air.

“The drainage tunnel bypasses the central ventilation!” Julian coughed, throwing his shoulder against the fallen debris to widen the opening. “Boost Titan up. Now!”

Elena didn’t hesitate. She grabbed Titan’s heavy harness, Julian caught the dog’s hindquarters, and with a coordinated grunt of sheer physical effort, they hoisted the massive 150-pound beast through the opening into the ventilation canal above. Titan scrambled onto the concrete ledge, turning around to pull Elena by her collar with his powerful jaws as Julian pushed her from below.

Elena scrambled onto the cold concrete of the upper canal, reaching her hand down immediately into the toxic fumes below. “Julian! Give me your hand!”

Julian grabbed her wrist, his weight almost pulling her back down. Titan clamped onto Elena’s jacket, anchoring her with brute canine strength. With a violent heave, Julian pulled his torso through just as a cloud of milky white gas flooded the lower vault floor.

They collapsed together onto the damp, cold tunnel floor, coughing violently, their lungs burning from the faint traces of the chemical fog.

Above them, through an iron grate forty yards down the pipe, they could see the wet gravel of the forested valley outside the estate. But standing right outside that grate, illuminated by the halogen headlights of three waiting black trucks, stood six heavily armed mercenaries, their assault rifles pointed directly at the drain outlet.
