Chapter 15 - Retribution

Victoria’s confident smile froze. Her head snapped toward the shadow cast by the towering metal scrap heap.
Stepping out from behind the heavy iron pillars, leaning heavily on a wooden walking stick, was Julian Cole.
His left arm was in a sling, his head wrapped in medical gauze, his face pale and battered—but his eyes burned with lethal clarity. Behind him emerged half a dozen armed federal marshals, their service weapons drawn and leveled directly at Dennis and Victoria.
“Drop the weapon, Dennis!” the lead marshal shouted. “Federal warrant! On the ground! Now!”
Dennis hesitated for a fraction of a second, his hand twitching toward his coat, but the click of six high-caliber rifles trained on his skull forced reality through his skull. He slowly raised his hands and dropped to his knees in the muddy gravel.
“Julian...?” Victoria choked out, her face draining of all color until she looked like a ghost. “You... you were shot.”
“Arthur shot a tactical contractor who tried to question his orders,” Julian said, his voice ringing with cold authority as he limped forward. “I took Arthur down while Dennis was chasing a freight train. Your father is already in federal custody in Milwaukee, Victoria. The entire paper trail—the clinic fraud, the forged adoption, the bribery of state officials—is already on the wire.”
Victoria took a stumbling step backward, but two marshals instantly stepped behind her, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
“You can’t do this!” Victoria screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into frantic shrieks as the cold steel bit into her skin. “I am a Cole! I am a Vance-Sterling! You have nothing without me! Julian, look at me!”
Julian didn't spare her a single glance. He walked straight past his ruined wife, his eyes fixed entirely on Hannah.
Hannah stood frozen against the tow truck, tears spilling uncontrollably over her cheeks. The exhaustion of the longest night of her life suddenly caught up with her; her knees buckled under the weight of relief.
Julian caught her before she touched the ground. His good arm wrapped firmly around her and Leo, pulling them both into a tight, unbreakable embrace against his chest.

“It’s over, Hannah,” Julian whispered into her hair, his own tears finally breaking free. “It’s over. You’re safe.”
In the warm shelter between them, baby Leo opened his bright, curious eyes, looking up at the sky as the morning rain finally began to clear, letting the first rays of sunlight break over the horizon."
