Chapter 2 - The Red Seal

The silence stretched between them like an overdrawn wire ready to snap. Outside, the autumn wind rattled the bedroom’s tall French windows, throwing dark shadows across the oriental rug.

Julian took two slow, calculated steps toward the mahogany secretary desk in the corner. Victoria stepped forward to block him, her ivory gown sweeping against the floor, but Julian didn’t hesitate; he shoved past her with enough force to send her stumbling back against the wall.

“Don’t touch my private things, Julian!” Victoria hissed, her aristocratic poise peeling away to reveal naked panic. “You have no right!”

Julian pulled open the top drawer. Inside lay a leather folder tied with black ribbon, alongside a small, unlabeled glass vial filled with amber liquid and an uncapped disposable syringe. His stomach turned violently. He pulled out the folder and flipped it open.

The document inside was printed on heavy bond paper, bearing the formal header of a private psychiatric sanatorium nestled three states away. It was a commitment order under Hannah Vance’s name, citing severe post-traumatic psychosis, violent delusions, and child endangerment. Attached to the back was a formal declaration of adoption surrender, pre-signed with a forged version of Hannah’s signature.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked from the papers to the syringe, then directly into his wife’s panicked eyes.

“You were going to drug her,” Julian said, the realization settling into his chest like cold lead. “You were going to drug her and have her dragged off to an asylum before I landed.”

“She’s a threat!” Victoria cried, regaining her footing, though her voice wavered. “She’s trying to destroy us! Can’t you see the way she looks at that child? She thinks she owns him! If the board finds out about this mess, your shares are forfeited. I was protecting you!”

“You were protecting your inheritance,” Hannah spoke up, her voice fragile but laced with iron. She gently slid her fingers underneath the infant’s harness, supporting his tiny neck as she struggled to stand. Her knees buckled, but she caught herself against the mattress. “She never wanted Leo. She only wanted the clause in your grandfather’s will satisfied. A living heir by Julian’s thirty-eighth birthday, or the estate goes to charity.”

Victoria’s gaze snapped toward Hannah with murderous intent. “Shut your filthy mouth!”

“Is that true?” Julian turned completely toward his wife, the folder crinkling in his white-knuckled grip.

“Julian, she's lying to drive a wedge between us,” Victoria pleaded, reaching out for his lapel.

Before her fingers could touch his fabric, the sharp echo of a pistol hammer cocking rang out from the shadowy entrance of the master hallway.
