Chapter 14 - The Surgical Gambit

The cabin fell into a suffocating, horrified silence. Lucas shrank back into his seat, his hand flying to the nape of his neck, where Julian could now see a faint, three-inch surgical scar running down the skin beneath his hairline.

Miller stepped out of the cockpit, his face grim. ""He's telling the truth. I just checked the satellite transponder logs. The plane’s automated communications system has been hijacked by an internal encrypted feed. It's routing through an auxiliary transmitter right beneath the cabin floorboards, pulling data directly from Lucas.""

""Turn the plane around!"" Julian demanded, panic threatening to break through his composure. ""If we stay below sixty degrees latitude, the broadcast won't trigger!""

""We can't,"" Miller said flatly. ""The navigation system is hard-locked. Arthur had the avionics pre-programmed before takeoff. We are flying on autopilot directly into the Icelandic relay corridor, and the cockpit controls are completely unresponsive. We have thirty-one minutes before the wipe command propagates.""

""Then we cut the power,"" Julian said, his mind racing through schematics and electrical logic. ""We disable the auxiliary transmitter.""

""You touch that transmitter,"" Arthur mocked, laughing aloud in his restraints, ""and the failsafe in his neck triggers a localized electrical discharge. It will cook his central nervous system in half a second. You have a choice, Julian: save your pathetic little brother and let the world burn into anarchy, or save the system and watch him die right in front of you. What does the great accountant choose when the numbers don't balance?""

Julian looked from his father’s mocking grin to Lucas’s terrified, tear-filled eyes. Then, his gaze shifted to Elena. She was awake, watching him quietly from the reclined seat, the same calm, evaluating look in her hazel eyes that she had worn that morning in the penthouse kitchen.

""Elena,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a steady, resolute murmur as he knelt beside her. ""You weren't just a procurement officer. You were the one who monitored his biometric stabilization in Zurich for two years. You know how the implant bridges the neural tissue.""

Elena swallowed hard, wincing as she lifted her hand, her fingers lightly brushing Julian’s cheek. ""There is a manual override port, Julian. But it’s not behind his neck. It’s inside his thoracic cavity. Arthur didn't want anyone to reach it without cracking his ribs open."" Julian looked down at the medical trauma kit sitting on the counter, his hands tightening into fists. ""Get the scalpel,"" Julian whispered.
