Chapter 8 - Ghosts on the Tarmac

Elena’s confession hung in the air like a sudden drop in cabin pressure. Julian felt his breath catch in his throat, his hands freezing against the warm blood soaking her jacket. ""My father died of cardiac arrest fifteen years ago,"" Julian choked out, his voice cracking against the loud rattle of gravel and ice hitting the undercarriage. ""I buried him in Surrey.""
""You buried an empty mahogany casket paid for by an offshore shell corporation,"" Miller shouted from the driver's seat, his knuckles white as he drifted the G-Wagon around a hair-raising hairpin turn, the cliff edge dropping three thousand feet into the misty valley below. ""Your old man, Arthur Vance, was the chief architect of the entire laundering corridor. When the regulators closed in, he faked his demise, scrubbed his identity, and used his two sons as collateral to keep the board from liquidating his accounts!""
A heavy impact shunted the Mercedes violently from behind. The reinforced pickup truck rammed their rear bumper, sending the G-Wagon into a terrifying slide. Miller fought the steering wheel, expertly feathering the gas until the snow tires caught the frozen asphalt of the lower valley road. They broke out of the dense pine forest into the flat, sprawling industrial outskirts of Sion. In the distance, the perimeter lights of the regional airport cut through the heavy gray dusk.
""He wants the drive,"" Elena gasped, her voice fading to a fragile whisper as her head fell back against the leather headrest. ""The encryption in Lucas’s spine... holds the private keys to Arthur’s remaining sixty billion. Arthur couldn't access it without both of your biometric signatures. That’s why he let you live in peace, Julian... you were the secondary key.""

Julian turned back to the road ahead. The airport security gates were coming up fast. Beyond the chain-link fence, parked on an isolated de-icing pad, sat an unmarked, sleek Gulfstream IV, its engines already whining in an idle taxi cycle. Surrounding the aircraft were three black SUVs, their hazard lights flashing through the swirling snow.
Miller didn't slow down. He mashed the throttle toward the closed perimeter gate. ""We have one shot at this! Once we breach the runway, airport security will scramble, but Arthur’s private security will shoot to kill!"" The heavy steel gate buckled and tore with a catastrophic metallic roar as the G-Wagon smashed through onto the tarmac, hurtling directly toward the waiting jet. But as the headlights illuminated the plane’s boarding stairs, Julian’s heart stopped. Standing at the top of the ramp, wrapped in a heavy fur-trimmed cashmere coat, was a tall, silver-haired man holding a remote detonator.
