Chapter 2 - The Humiliation at the Curb

The afternoon sun scorched the concrete forecourt of Serenity Shores Resort. Julian’s luggage—six monogrammed leather trunks and Chloe’s designer wardrobe bags—sat unceremoniously piled near the taxi stand. Resort guests entering from luxury towncars cast sideways glances, whispering behind manicured hands at the disgraced heir standing beside his luggage like an ordinary stranded traveler.

“Call Arthur,” Chloe hissed, pacing across the asphalt in her stiletto heels, her phone pressed tightly to her ear. “Call your father’s old attorney right now! She has lost her mind! You are a fifty-percent beneficiary of the family holdings!”

Julian frantically thumbed through his phone contacts, sweat staining the collar of his navy polo shirt. His hands were trembling, betraying the brittle composure he had worn for thirty-eight years. Every call he placed to the Vance corporate offices in Manhattan was diverted straight to an automated legal compliance hotline.

“None of them are picking up,” Julian muttered, staring at the screen in pure disbelief. “Frank isn't answering. Douglas isn't answering. Even the direct line to the family estate is ringing through to voicemail.”

“She planned this,” Chloe spat, her face contorting with venom. “This wasn’t about my comment at the desk. She knew we were flying in today. She deliberately wore those plain linen clothes to lure us into a trap!”

Julian looked up at the towering glass facade of the resort, where Evelyn’s private penthouse balcony overlooked the turquoise ocean. He remembered the last words his father had spoken on his deathbed five years ago: ‘Julian, your mother built the foundations while I merely negotiated the contracts. Cross her, and she will tear the ground out from under you without blinking.’ He had dismissed it as the senile ramblings of a dying man. Now, the concrete under his feet felt like paper.

A sleek black towncar pulled up, but not to offer them a ride. Head of Security Marcus stepped out, flanked by two towering guards. He held a sealed manila envelope.

“Mr. Vance,” Marcus said tonelessly, extending the envelope. “Per Mrs. Vance’s explicit directives, your company credit facilities have been suspended pending an emergency audit. Furthermore, this is a formal trespass notification barring you and Ms. Mercer from all Vance Hospitality properties worldwide.”

“You work for my family, Marcus!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with humiliation as several guests turned to watch. “My name is on the legal deed of this entire coastline!”

Marcus didn't flinch. “Your name was removed from the operating trust three hours ago, sir. Mrs. Vance exercised Section 14 of the founder's charter.”

Chloe lunged forward. “Section 14? What the hell is Section 14?”

Marcus offered a thin, professional grimace. “Moral turpitude and corporate dishonor. A car has been ordered to take you to the municipal train station. Please clear the drive.”

As Marcus walked away, Julian frantically ripped open the envelope. Inside lay not a legal negotiation, but a certified copy of a bank receipt: all of Julian's personal liquid accounts had been frozen under a court injunction.

Attached to the bottom was a handwritten note in his mother’s immaculate calligraphy: ‘Let us see how much your arrogance buys you when you must earn your own bread.’
