Chapter 5 - The Bitter Truth

Julian’s grin wavered at his mother’s calm demand. “Don’t try to bluff your way out of this, Mother. We have the legal stamp. We have father’s signature.”
“Open it,” Evelyn repeated, her gaze unblinking.
Chloe’s hands shook slightly as she tore through the red wax seal and slipped the thick parchment from the folder. Julian leaned over her shoulder, his chest heaving with anticipation, waiting to read the legal declaration of his ultimate victory. But as his eyes scanned the opening paragraphs, the color drained from his skin with terrifying speed.
It was not a codicil. It was an official adoption decree, dated thirty-six years ago, stamped by the state supreme court, alongside a confidential paternity disclaimer.
“What… what is this?” Julian stammered, his fingers clawing at the paper as if the words might vanish. “This isn't the trust document. This says… non-biological custody agreement?”
Evelyn stepped into the center of the shattered salon, stepping over the shards of broken mirror. Each word she spoke landed like a hammer blow on a glass monument.
“Richard was sterile, Julian. He could never father children. When his family threatened to disinherit him thirty-eight years ago for failing to produce an heir, we adopted an infant from an orphanage in upstate New York.”
Julian’s breath hitched, a strangled gasp escaping his throat. “No. No, that’s impossible. I look like him! Everyone said I had his eyes, his chin—!”
“You had his vanity and his cruelty because he raised you to believe the world owed you everything,” Evelyn said, her voice laced with the heavy sorrow of a mother who had watched a long, slow tragedy unfold. “The bloodline you constantly brag about does not exist. The Vance name was a gift given to you by two people who hoped you would grow into an honorable man.”
Chloe looked down at the document in sheer horror, then turned on Julian like a viper. “You’re not Richard Vance’s biological son? The multi-billion-dollar trust… the bloodline exemption clauses…”
“The trust stipulates that non-lineage beneficiaries must retain continuous board approval to access the family estate,” Evelyn stated plainly. “Richard signed that agreement himself to ensure that if you ever turned into a reckless tyrant, I would have the unilateral legal power to cast you out completely.”
Julian dropped the crowbar. It clattered loudly against the floorboards. He fell to his knees amidst the debris, staring blankly at the adoption decree in Chloe’s hands.
“All my life…” Julian whispered, tears of shock finally welling in his eyes. “You lied to me.”
“We protected you,” Evelyn countered, her voice hardening once more. “We gave you an empire on a silver platter. And what did you do with it? You insulted the people who clean your rooms. You sneered at honest work. You surrounded yourself with leeches who loved your bank balance, not your soul.”
Chloe backed away slowly, dropping the duffel bag of jewelry onto the floor as she realized the golden goose had just been stripped of every feather.
“ Julian, you said you were the sole heir,” Chloe whispered, disgust replacing her former reverence. “You lied to me.”
“Chloe, wait—!” Julian reached out, but she turned on her heel and sprinted toward the door, leaving him alone on his knees among the ruins.

Evelyn looked down at the broken man on the floor.
“Pack a single suitcase, Julian. You leave this property tonight, or you leave it in handcuffs.”
