Chapter 1 - The Defiance in Marble

The silence hanging in the grand hall was heavier than the crystal chandelier suspended above them. Christian stood entirely motionless, his tall frame rigid beneath the dark tailored overcoat. The scar above his right eyebrow throbbed with a cold fury he rarely let anyone witness. For years, every living creature within a hundred-mile radius of the Vance estate obeyed his slightest whisper, yet here, on polished Italian marble, an unprecedented mutiny had just unfolded before three of his most trusted security guards.
Titan, the nine-month-old Cane Corso trained specifically to rip a man’s throat out on command, rested his massive head squarely on Clara’s bare foot. The leather harness Christian had custom-fitted for the beast sat slack against its muscular back.
Clara leaned back into the plush ivory armchair, the silk of her robe pooling around her like running water. She raised her eyes slowly, letting her gaze climb Christian’s six-foot-two frame without a flicker of remorse or hesitation.
""Well... that seems pretty clear,"" she repeated, her tone calm, deliberate, and deliberately infuriating. Her slender fingers drifted downward, burying themselves lightly into the coarse black fur behind Titan’s cropped ears. The mastiff let out a low, content rumble that sounded like thunder rolling across the floorboards.
""You think this is amusing, Clara?"" Christian asked, his voice deceptively soft, dropping into the octave that usually made boardrooms evacuate. ""You think winning over an animal shields you from what you signed?""
""I don't think,"" Clara replied, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. ""I observe. And right now, I observe that your million-dollar guard dog knows who feeds him soul, and who only feeds him commands.""
Christian took a calculated step forward, his polished leather shoes striking the stone like hammer blows. The guards behind him shifted, their handguns subtly concealed beneath dark tailored blazers, their breath caught in their throats. They had never seen a woman speak to Christian Vance like this and live to finish the sentence.
Titan’s head lifted. The dog’s ears pinned forward, its golden eyes locking onto Christian’s boots. A warning vibration rippled through the dog's ribcage, subtle yet unmistakable.
Christian froze mid-stride. Disbelief flashed behind his slate-gray eyes, quickly swallowed by an icy veil of detachment. ""He won't protect you when dawn arrives. Pack whatever you brought into this house. By morning, an escort will take you across state lines.""
Clara didn't flinch. She simply ran her thumb over Titan’s collar, feeling the cold silver buckle that concealed a tiny compartment Christian had assumed she never found.

""I’m not packing anything, Christian,"" Clara said softly, her pulse steady. ""Because before dawn breaks, you'll be on your knees begging me to stay.""
Christian laughed, a bitter, humorless sound that died the moment his personal phone buzzed violently in his inner coat pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted screen, and the color drained completely from his sharp face.
