Chapter 8 - The Brother's Price

Julian Thorne looked older than his thirty-two years, his eyes sunken, etched with the hollow indifference of a soldier who had spent too long doing dirty work in the dark. The resemblance to Clara was unmistakable—the same sharp cheekbones, the same clear hazel eyes, but stripped of all empathy.
""Julian,"" Clara whispered, her voice catching in her throat. She stepped forward, but Christian’s arm barred her path like an iron gate.
""Stay back, Clara,"" Christian ordered, his Glock aimed directly between Julian's eyes. ""He’s not your brother anymore. He’s a Syndicate asset.""
Julian let out a dry, hacking laugh that echoed off the damp stone walls. ""Always the strategist, aren't you, Vance? You talk about assets like you didn't buy my silence with blood money. You think I chose this? Your old man didn't give me a choice. He told me if I ever returned to this country, Clara would disappear into an unmarked grave.""
""And now you come back to finish his work?"" Clara asked, her voice cracking with betrayal. ""You came here to kill me?""
""I came here to survive!"" Julian shouted, his composure splintering for a fraction of a second, the laser sight trembling slightly against Clara’s robe. ""The Syndicate knows the old man is dead. They know the Vance empire is collapsing. They offered me my life and a clean identity in exchange for the girl in container forty-two. Hand over the terminal key, Clara. Hand it over, and I walk away. I let you both take the boat.""
""You know what they'll do to that child,"" Clara said, taking a deliberate step forward, pushing past Christian's outstretched arm. ""They'll use her to bleed Nikolai Volkov dry, and then they'll throw her into the sea.""
""She’s not my family!"" Julian snapped, his eyes flashing with raw desperation. ""You are! And right now, giving them what they want is the only way you walk out of this basement alive!""
Christian watched Julian’s hand. The mercenary’s finger was whitening against the trigger. The man was unhinged, trapped between terror of the Syndicate and the ghost of his former life.
Titan felt the tension, shifting his weight onto his back legs, every tendon coiling like a steel spring.
""Julian,"" Clara said softly, her voice returning to that calm, mesmerizing frequency she had used on the dog upstairs. ""Look at me. Look at who I am now. I’m not the scared little girl you left in the rain.""
Julian blinked, his aim faltering slightly. ""Clara...""
""You forgot one thing, brother,"" Clara whispered.

In that fraction of a second of hesitation, Christian didn't shoot. He lunged sideways, deliberately drawing Julian’s line of sight toward him, giving Clara the opening she needed.
""Titan, kill!"" Clara screamed.
