Chapter 1 - The Broken Oath

The vault was heavy with the smell of ancient damp stone, burnt tallow, and the acrid musk of a captive predator. Down through the circular ceiling oculus, the single shaft of morning light cut across the darkness like a holy blade, illuminating floating dust motes and the colossal, pale beast chained beneath it. Her ivory scales, scarred by rusted iron links thicker than a grown man’s torso, rose and fell in ragged, shallow gasps.
Seven-year-old Lyra stood frozen on the straw-strewn flagstones, her leather boots rooted to the floor. Against her collarbone, a faint warmth fluttered. Cradled securely within the folds of her oversized olive tunic was the hatchling—barely larger than a falcon, with wings soft as wet parchment and eyes like fractured obsidian. It let out a reedy, chirping whine that seemed to reverberate against the vaulted ceilings, echoing into the shadows where armed castle sentries stood posted behind iron portcullises.
The colossal mother shifted. The grinding shriek of iron against stone was deafening as she hauled her massive skull forward. Her left horn was sheared clean off, a remnant of the day King Ronald’s hunters had dragged her down from the northern ridges. When her great amber-gold eye opened, the slit pupil contracted, locking directly onto the child.
Lyra did not run. Instinct held her still, whispered through bloodlines she had only just begun to comprehend. Slowly, lifting one trembling hand from beneath the hatchling’s belly, she reached forward. The giant reptile let out an exhale that washed over the child like desert air, fragrant with sulfur and heat.

Lyra’s small, pale fingertips grazed the pebbled bridge of the beast’s snout. A shock of deep, resonant vibration passed between them, calming the violent shudder in the mother dragon’s limbs. For a heartbeat, there was profound peace.
Then, the heavy oak doors at the top of the subterranean staircase groaned open, followed by the clanking armor of advancing sentries. From the shadows, the hatchling suddenly bit down on Lyra's sleeve, jerking backward toward the black sewer culvert behind the pillars as the first crossbow bolt sliced through the shaft of light.
