Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

""Don't move, Mr. Ashford,"" a rough voice muttered behind Julian’s ear. The scent of cheap tobacco and stale cologne cut through the perfumed air of the foyer.
Julian’s breath seized. He kept his eyes locked on Victoria, who slowly lowered the golf club, resting the gleaming steel head against the pristine marble with an arrogant clatter. The sound made Lily flinch violently, burying her tear-streaked face deeper into Sofia's apron.
""Take Sofia to the basement cellar,"" Victoria commanded without glancing at the armed man behind her husband. ""And bring the girl to the study. We have paperwork to finalize before the public discovers our little tragedy.""
""Daddy!"" Lily wailed, her voice cracking as a second man emerged from the shadows of the dining hall, his hands rough and callous as he ripped the child from Sofia's frantic grip.
""Don't you touch her!"" Sofia screamed, clawing at the man's face, drawing crimson lines down his cheek. The thug cursed, striking Sofia across the temple with the heavy back of his hand. Julian lurched forward in an instinctive surge of protective fury, but the gun barrel drove mercilessly into his neck, forcing him to his knees as pain flared through his skull.
""Patience, Julian,"" Victoria whispered, stepping delicately across the floor, her high heels tapping an ominous rhythm. She knelt beside him, her fingers cool and smooth against his bruised jawline. ""Your family’s empire was built on stolen foundations. Your father took everything from mine twenty-five years ago. Did you really think our marriage was an act of serendipity?""
Julian looked into the eyes of the woman he had loved, the woman he had shared a bed with every night for nearly a decade, and found only a stranger. ""You married me for revenge?""
May you like
""I married you for the key,"" she corrected coldly. She reached into her handbag and pulled out a heavy brass cylinder, intricately carved with interlocking serpentine gears—the key to the private archive beneath the Ashford estate. ""And your precious daughter found where you hid it. Kill the maid,"" she added casually to the guard. ""Leave Julian for the safe.""
Julian lunged forward despite the gun, but a heavy blow to the back of his head plunged his world into suffocating blackness.
