Chapter 3 - The Crypt of Truth

Julian woke to the pungent smell of copper and damp earth. His temples throbbed with a sickening cadence, every heartbeat sending ripples of nausea through his gut. Blinking against the darkness, he realized his hands were bound tightly behind his back with industrial zip ties, secured to an iron support beam.
He was in the lowest level of the estate—the sub-cellar, a forgotten stone chamber beneath the wine cellar that predated the mansion itself. A single exposed bulb swung lazily overhead, casting swinging shadows across rows of decaying wooden crates.
A few feet away lay Sofia. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths, her face pale, a streak of dried blood matting her dark hair.
""Sofia,"" Julian rasped, his throat dry like sandpaper. ""Sofia, can you hear me?""
The maid groaned softly, her eyelids fluttering open. Panic flared in her dark eyes before she recognized Julian. ""Mr. Ashford... Lily... they took her upstairs...""
""I know. I'm going to get her out,"" Julian said, throwing his weight against the iron beam. The heavy plastic ties dug deep into his wrists, drawing blood, but the nylon refused to give. ""How did Victoria know about the vault? I never told a soul.""
Sofia dragged herself into a sitting position against the wall, her breath coming in ragged gasps. ""She’s been searching for months, sir. Every time you left the country on business. She didn't find it on her own... your lawyer, Mr. Vance... he brought her the floor plans.""
The revelation struck Julian harder than any physical blow. Marcus Vance was his oldest friend, his confidant, the man who had drawn up his father’s will.
""Marcus..."" Julian whispered, a bitter laugh tearing from his throat. ""A complete slaughter of everyone I trusted.""
""Lily found a diary inside the wall,"" Sofia whispered, trembling. ""It had names... names of people who disappeared decades ago. Miss Victoria found Lily holding it. She looked like a demon, Mr. Ashford. She was going to kill her right there if I hadn't stepped in.""

Before Julian could answer, the heavy wooden cellar door at the top of the stairs creaked open. Footsteps descended slowly, deliberate and heavy. But it wasn't the thug who had struck Julian down. Emerging into the dim light was Marcus Vance, impeccably dressed in his bespoke charcoal suit, carrying a silver briefcase and an automatic handgun.
""I’m sorry it came to this, Julian,"" Marcus said smoothly. ""Truly, I am.""
