Chapter 14 - The Clock Expires
Elena froze, the sirens drawing rapidly closer, their strobes painting the rain-drenched alley in violent pulses of red and blue.
""What is she talking about, Cole?"" Elena turned, her voice dropping into an agonized whisper.
Cole stared at the thumb drive in Elena’s hand, the reality crashing down on him with absolute finality. ""She's telling the truth. The drive was programmed with a dead-man's trigger. If it’s removed from the safe's magnetic field without entering the bypass cipher within thirty minutes, it auto-transmits the contents to an offshore proxy.""
""Then enter the cipher!"" Elena cried, stepping toward him. ""You know it, don't you?""
Cole looked down at Leo, who was shivering under his arm, then looked up into Elena's eyes. The guilt in his face was deeper than any ocean.
""I only know half of the code, Elena,"" Cole said softly, rain plastering his hair to his forehead. ""Your father never trusted me with the full sequence. The second half... he told me it was the date of his greatest regret.""
Elena’s mind raced through the fragments of her childhood—the distant father who spent late nights locked behind library doors, the whispered arguments with her mother, the sudden disappearance of her family's fortune.
