Chapter 15 - Ashes and Clean Slates

""Cole, give me your phone!"" Elena shouted over the roaring sirens and the pelting rain.

Cole handed her the damp device. With shaking fingers, Elena opened the decryption portal linked to the drive’s wireless broadcast. A countdown timer flashed in crimson digits: 00:00:42... 00:00:41...

She typed in the date her father had forged her signature on the offshore trust fund—the day she had unknowingly become a pawn in a seven-million-dollar criminal enterprise.

00:00:12... 00:00:11...

She pressed confirm.

The screen flickered violently. A progress bar flashed: AUTHENTICATING... CIPHER ACCEPTED. But instead of canceling the transmission, a new prompt appeared in stark capital letters: SELECT OVERWRITE OPTION: BROADCAST OR PURGE ALL.

Elena looked at Vanessa, pinned against the cruiser by two arresting officers. She looked at Cole, standing in the glare of the police spotlights, his hands raised, waiting for the handcuffs, his eyes filled with quiet, resigned sorrow. If she purged the files, her father’s crimes would vanish forever, saving her family’s name but erasing the evidence that could clear Cole of conspiracy. If she broadcasted it, Cole would go free, but her father's legacy—and her brother's future—would be burned to the ground.

Her thumb hovered over the glass screen as an officer's hand fell heavily on Cole's shoulder.

Elena pressed down on the glass. The screen went dead. In the blinding glare of the police lights, Cole looked back at her one last time as the steel cuffs snapped shut around his wrists, and Elena heard the low, unmistakable hum of a device connecting to the city grid."
