THE ASHES BENEATH HER VEIL / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Bloodstained Aisle

The scent of thousands of fresh white hydrangeas and fragrant lilies filled the grand glass conservatory, but as the tall double doors swung inward, the air grew violently cold. Outside, the afternoon sun beamed like an unforgiving searchlight, casting a grotesque, elongated shadow straight down the polished marble runway.

Victoria stood near the altar, her slender fingers tightening against the thick folds of her custom ivory satin gown. The emerald pendant resting against her collarbone rose and fell in quick, shallow beats. Beside her, Julian Vance—the golden heir to the Vance empire—froze mid-breath. His polished leather shoes remained glued to the floral platform, his aristocratic smile disintegrating into sheer bewilderment.

Down at the threshold stood a figure that seemed ripped from a waking nightmare. Barefoot, skin wrapped in ragged, yellowish medical gauze crusted with dried brown rust and fresh crimson smears, the intruder stood completely motionless. An oversized, frayed trench coat hung loosely over a threadbare surgical gown. But it was the head that seized every breath in the room: layers upon layers of dirty linen bandages cocooned the face entirely, leaving only sunken, hollow shadows where eyes ought to be.

A glass flute slipped from an elderly gentleman’s hand in the front row, shattering violently against the marble tiles. Champagne bubbled over broken crystal, mirroring the absolute silence that crushed the room.

Step. Step.

The intruder moved forward without hesitation. The wet, soft slap of bandaged soles against high-gloss stone echoed like a funeral drum beneath the crystal chandeliers. Behind Victoria, Julian’s father, Arthur Vance, swallowed dryly. His silver hair caught the midday glow, but all color had evacuated his face, leaving behind a sheen of cold sweat.

“Stop right there!” Arthur’s voice cracked across the chapel, devoid of its usual courtroom authority.

The intruder did not slow. The bandaged hands slowly lifted into the air. Two burly security guards in black suits bolted from the side entrance, their hands reaching instinctively into their lapels, yet before their fingers touched leather, they stopped. The figure’s chest rose in a long, rattling inhale—a sound so hollow and broken it paralyzed every man and woman present.

Victoria felt her pulse hammering behind her temples. The posture. The slight cant of the shoulders. The unnatural stillness of the spine. Memories she had buried under three years of therapy, grief, and calculated indifference rose from the grave with suffocating force.

“Wait…” Victoria’s lips parted, a fragile gasp escaping into the suffocating hall.

The intruder halted precisely five yards from the altar. The linen around the fingers frayed as the figure reached up and grabbed the edge of the gauze covering the forehead. Slowly, deliberate and trembling with suppressed fury, the intruder tore the first strip loose.

A sharp, collective cry rang through the hall as the bandage fell away, revealing not charred flesh, but a pair of striking, piercing violet eyes—eyes that had belonged to Victoria’s sister, declared dead in an incinerated offshore yacht three years ago.
