Chapter 3 - The Ticking Vow

The sight of the digital timer turned the elegant sanctuary into utter chaos. High-society women shrieked, tearing through their floor-length silk gowns as they trampled over hydrangeas to reach the double doors. Men who controlled global hedge funds shoved past their own wives, desperate to find an exit.

“Move! Out! Everyone out!” Julian screamed, retreating toward the vestry behind the altar, abandoning Victoria without a backward glance.

The two security guards instantly released their grip on Evelyn and backed away, hands raised, eyes wide with raw animal dread. “Don't move! Ma’am, please, don’t press anything!” one guard pleaded, his voice cracking before he turned on his heel and sprinted through the side fire exit.

Within forty seconds, the opulent chapel was nearly empty. Only four people remained standing beneath the grand chandelier: Evelyn, standing tall like a pale monument of retribution; Victoria, frozen in her sweeping wedding dress; Julian, hesitating halfway inside the vestry door; and Arthur Vance, who stood completely still in the center of the debris.

The digital timer hummed softly. 04:12.

“Run, Victoria,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping lower, sounding almost tender amidst the nightmare. “Run like you ran the night you saw Julian tamper with my car in the harbor.”

Victoria’s world spun violently. The marble floor seemed to tilt beneath her silk-covered heels. “What are you talking about? Julian was with me that night! We were at the gallery opening!”

“Ask him,” Evelyn murmured, her bandaged hand pointing a crooked finger toward the groom cowering by the altar exit. “Ask him why he has a burn scar across his left collarbone that precisely matches the ignition coil of a yacht engine. Ask him why our father’s entire estate transfer was signed forty-eight hours before the explosion.”

Victoria slowly turned her head toward Julian. Her fiancé, the man she had loved, the man whose ring rested on her finger, was staring at the bandaged woman with naked, feral terror.

“She’s lying, Victoria!” Julian shouted from across the chancel. “She was unhinged before the accident! She’s trying to destroy us!”

“Look at your father, Julian,” Evelyn continued, her violet eyes burning into Arthur Vance. “He isn't denying it. He knows the offshore trust he opened in Panama under my name was designed to take the fall for Vance Maritime’s smuggling operation. When I discovered the manifests, you two realized I wasn't the docile sister Victoria was. I had to burn.”

Arthur slowly closed his eyes. When he opened them, the panic had receded, replaced by the icy, calculating cruelty that had built his billion-dollar empire.

“You survived the hull breach,” Arthur said calmly, stepping around the broken flowers. “A remarkable feat of resilience, Evelyn. But coming here with a homemade detonator only finishes what the fire started.”

“Oh, Arthur,” Evelyn whispered, a chilling sound vibrating through the linen wraps. “You think I came here to die? Look at the countdown. Look at where the transmitter is actually wired.”

Victoria looked down. A thin, hair-like wire led from Evelyn’s vest down to the marble floor, disappearing directly beneath the altar carpet where Victoria had been standing for the past half hour.
