Chapter 4 - The Lower Concourse

When the ringing in Vance's ears faded, the office was swallowed in acrid grey smoke. The tactical team was systematically clearing corners, their laser sights sweeping the gloom.
""Where is he?"" the point-man snarled, pressing his boot onto the shattered fragments of the smartphone.
Vance shook his head, blinking away the purple afterimages burned into his retinas. The executive chair was empty. The bottom desk drawer hung open—a concealed escape chute, once intended for cold-war documents, led straight into the building's maintenance ventilation shaft.
Forty floors below, inside the service elevator shaft, Leo rode the top of the counterweight carriage. His hands were coated in black grease, his bespoke tie ruined, but his eyes burned with fierce intensity. Clutched under his arm was an analog cellular backup unit.
He tapped a sequence of keys with his thumb.
""Claire,"" he whispered through an encrypted earpiece. ""Status?""
""I slipped out through the service stairs,"" Claire’s voice trembled through the static. ""Vance is alive, but they took him into custody. They think he has your cipher. Leo, they’ve mobilized the National Guard’s Digital Division. They’ve declared you an economic fugitive.""
""Let them,"" Leo said, watching the floor markers flash past in the dim fluorescent shaft: 14... 13... 12... ""They only control the public infrastructure. What about the underground data hub in Brooklyn?""

""It’s dark,"" Claire replied. ""Abandoned since the crash of '24. But Leo... there's someone waiting down there. Someone who says she was your first follower.""
The elevator car beneath him groaned to a sudden halt between floors, the emergency brakes screaming against the rails.
