Chapter 3 - Blood and Shadows

The room seemed to freeze. Clara’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at the woman who had spent years manipulating her mother's misery.
"What did you say?" Clara gasped, taking a step toward Victoria. "My mother had no one. It was just the two of us in that damp, rotting house. She worked until her hands bled to keep a roof over my head!"
Victoria gave a chilling, breathless laugh as the officer snapped the cold steel cuffs around her slender wrists. "Ask Arthur. Ask him why Eleanor's medical bills suddenly stopped being paid three years before she died. Ask why she agreed to send her firstborn away while keeping you hidden in plain sight."
Julian moved swiftly, stepping between Victoria and Clara, towering over his wife with an aura of pure fury. "Shut your mouth, Victoria. If this is another lie—"
"It isn't a lie, Julian," Victoria hissed, refusing to break eye contact. "Eleanor had a son first. Born eighteen months before this pathetic creature. A boy you never looked for, because your father made sure he was placed with a family far across the border. If Clara has a claim to your blood, so does he. And he isn't a meek little maid serving your tea."
With a firm grip on her arm, the officers escorted Victoria Vance out into the rainy night. The front door clicked shut, leaving behind a deafening, hollow quiet.
Clara turned to Julian, her chin quivering. "Is it true? Did I... do I have a brother?"
Julian closed his eyes, overwhelmed by the ghost of a past he thought he had buried under skyscrapers and balance sheets. When he opened them, the cold corporate titan was gone; only an aging, broken man remained.
"I don't know, Clara," Julian said softly, extending a hand, which she finally took. Her fingers were ice-cold. "I swear on everything I possess, I did not know Eleanor was pregnant when we parted. But we are going to find out. Every stone. Every shadow."

Arthur cleared his throat quietly from behind them. "Julian, before we look into Eleanor's past records, there is something you need to see right now. The safety deposit box contained one more item."
Arthur reached into his briefcase and produced an unsealed, yellowed envelope addressed in Eleanor's delicate, looping script. On the front, it bore a single, ominous instruction: To Julian — Open only if Clara is standing before you.
