Chapter 5 - The Intruder in the Rain

Darkness swallowed the estate, punctuated only by the lightning flashing outside the floor-to-ceiling French windows.
"Stay behind me," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a protective, commanding pitch he hadn't used in years. He reached into the lower drawer of his mahogany desk, pulling out a revolver he had kept locked away since his days in the military.
"Julian, look," Clara whispered, pointing toward the garden terrace.
A lone silhouette stood drenched in the torrential downpour, illuminated by the flashes of lightning. The figure wore a dark trench coat, standing completely still beside the stone fountain. He did not look like a common burglar; he possessed the cold, rigid posture of a soldier awaiting orders.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the terrace shattered with a deafening crash.
Clara gasped, backing away against the wall of books. Julian raised the firearm, leveling it directly at the threshold where shards of rain-slicked glass covered the floor.
"Step out into the light," Julian warned, his grip steady despite the pounding of his heart.
A man stepped through the wreckage. He was tall, his broad shoulders soaked with rain, his dark hair plastered to his forehead. He couldn't have been older than twenty-four. As lightning split the night sky once more, Julian’s breath froze.
The young man had Eleanor’s delicate mouth and soft cheekbones, but his eyes were cold, vacant, and utterly devoid of mercy.
"Put the gun down, Mr. Vance," the young man spoke, his voice smooth and raspy. "A bullet won't undo twenty-four years of exile."
Clara stared at him from behind the desk, her heart racing against her ribs. "Lucas?"
The intruder slowly turned his head toward her. A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of his lips. "Hello, sister. You grew up scrubbing floors for the monster who destroyed our mother. I was raised to burn him down."

Julian lowered the gun an inch, his voice shaking. "Lucas... what has my father done to you?"
Lucas laughed, a sound as cold as the rain outside. "Your father made me his ultimate contingency. And I'm not here to negotiate."
