Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Bone Yard

""They have thermal trackers,"" Vincent realized, his pulse hammering against his ribs. Modern mercenary units working for corporate cartels didn't rely on flashlights; they used infrared optics that could pick up body heat blooming through the frigid underground tunnels.
""Come,"" Vincent commanded, extinguishing his light.
Relying entirely on memory and the tactile sensation of limestone walls lined with skeletal remains, Vincent led Leo through the labyrinth. The boy moved with surprising grace, his light frame slipping silently over the damp, irregular flagstones. Clara had trained him well; he moved like a child raised under constant threat, his breathing shallow and controlled.
Behind them, the iron hatch slammed down against the stone floor with a violent crash. Footsteps followed—heavy, rhythmic, tactical combat boots descending the stairs.
""Thermal signatures moving west through corridor Delta,"" a cold voice transmitted over a tactical radio, echoing faintly down the stone hall. ""Target confirmed with child. Authorization is lethal for the elder. Secure the boy alive.""
Vincent pulled Leo into a narrow alcove between two towering pillars of stacked human bones. The air was freezing, their breath pluming faintly in the absolute dark. Vincent pressed his back against the cold stone, holding the pistol raised near his cheek. He had only nine rounds left.
A flashlight beam swept across the tunnel intersection just five yards ahead. The beam caught the hollow eye sockets of thousands of skulls, casting grotesque, shifting shadows across the ceiling. An operative stepped into view, his assault rifle held at the low-ready position, night-vision goggles flipped down over his eyes.
Vincent waited. He needed the man to commit past the threshold of the intersection. One miscalculation, and the muzzle flash would give away their position to the second and third pursuers.
The operative took two slow steps forward, sweeping his rifle toward the alcove.
Vincent struck. He lunged out from the dark, knocking the operative's rifle barrel toward the ground with his left forearm while driving the butt of his pistol directly into the man's throat. The soldier gasped, choking, but managed to swing a heavy armored elbow toward Vincent's injured temple. The blow landed hard, sending Vincent stumbling backward against a wall of bones. Skulls tumbled down with an echoing clatter.
The operative raised his sidearm, aiming point-blank at Vincent's chest.
Suddenly, a small shadow darted from the darkness. Leo slammed a jagged, heavy femur bone with all his might across the back of the operative's knee. The man’s leg buckled, his shot going wild into the ceiling, showering them with ancient limestone dust.
Vincent didn't waste the split second bought by the child's courage. He lunged forward, locking the operative in a brutal sleeper hold until the man went completely limp on the floor.
Vincent stripped the soldier of his radio, extra ammunition, and a tactical comms earpiece, shoving the earpiece into his own ear.
Immediately, Julian’s voice crackled through the channel: ""Squad Alpha, report. Have you eliminated Vincent?""
May you like
Vincent keyed the transmitter, his voice cold as the grave surrounding them. ""Not yet, nephew. But your man is sleeping with the dead. I'm coming for you.""
From the speaker, Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he simply laughed. ""Check the city feeds, Uncle. You won't make it two blocks past the surface.""
