Chapter 7 - The Crypt of the Seventh Knight

Beneath the shadow of the south tower, tucked behind a stone buttress veiled by thick English ivy, rested a low iron door that looked like an abandoned coal chute. Vincent took a small steel pick from his pocket, manipulated the hidden tumbler lock within the ancient stonework, and heard a satisfying mechanical click.

He pushed Leo inside, stepped through, and sealed the door behind them.

The sudden silence was absolute. The echoing acoustics of the massive church above did not penetrate this deep sub-basement. Vincent clicked on his tactical light, sweeping the chamber. Unlike the public crypts, this room was pristine, dry, and preserved. In the center of the vault stood a single limestone sarcophagus engraved with the roaring lion of the de La Tour crest.

""This is it,"" Vincent murmured. ""The tomb of Henri de La Tour, the seventh knight of our bloodline.""

Leo walked slowly toward the tomb, his eyes drawn to a bronze relief panel set into the side of the stone. ""Mother had me memorize the phrase on the back of the pendant. Fidelis usque ad mortem.""

""Faithful unto death,"" Vincent translated softly.

He approached the sarcophagus. At the base of the knight's sculpted shield was a circular indentation matching the exact dimensions of the silver medallion. Vincent retrieved the medallion from his coat and placed it into the slot. It sank flush into the stone with a soft pneumatic hiss.

""Leo, place your right thumb on the crest,"" Vincent instructed.

The boy did not hesitate. He pressed his small thumb against the lion's head. A faint prick of a needle drew a single drop of blood, followed by a faint mechanical click deep inside the sarcophagus.

The heavy stone lid did not slide; instead, a hidden drawer slid silently out from the base of the tomb. Inside lay an antique leather-bound journal, a modern encrypted military hard drive, and a dossier bearing the personal wax seal of Clara de La Tour.

Vincent’s hands shook as he picked up his daughter's handwritten letter. He broke the wax and unfolded the paper.

Father, the letter read in Clara's elegant, hurried script.

If you are reading this, Leo found you. And it means Julian has launched his final phase. He did not act alone. He has partnered with the Valmont Syndicate to liquidate the family's assets through black-market arms transit. I uncovered the shipment manifests in the port of Le Havre. When I confronted him, he tried to kill us. I hid Leo, but I could not run forever. Father, they are holding me at the old dry docks at Saint-Nazaire. Julian needs my living signature alongside yours to bypass the board. Don't come for me alone. He has built an army.

Vincent lowered the letter, his face pale, his silver beard bristling with fury.

""She's alive,"" Vincent whispered, a surge of fierce life returning to his eyes. ""Leo, your mother is alive.""

Leo let out a sob, burying his face in Vincent’s torso. ""I knew it. I knew she didn't leave me.""

Vincent gently held the boy, but his gaze fell upon the encrypted hard drive. Beside it lay a small GPS beacon, its digital interface pulsing steadily with a coordinates map.

Suddenly, a harsh metallic clatter echoed from the ceiling above the tomb. The ancient circular air shaft was shaking.

A canister of tear gas rolled down the shaft, bouncing onto the limestone floor and spewing acrid white smoke into the vault.
