Chapter 4 - The Algorithm's Architects

The men in tactical vests did not draw weapons; they drew specialized directional microphones and cellular uplink backpacks. Emblazoned across their black nylon vests was a silver logo: OmniStream Viral Media Inc. They were not the law. They were Julian’s financiers, the corporate sponsors who owned the proprietary software running the livestream.
A woman in a sharp grey wool overcoat stepped out from the passenger side, ignoring the damp mud that coated her designer leather boots. Her hair was pulled into an immaculate, tight bun. She held a slate-grey tablet that displayed a real-time heat map of viewer engagement across six continents.
“Julian, step away from the hedges,” she commanded, her voice cutting through the damp chill with icy precision. “You’ve violated section four of your performance contract. You stopped the progression of the narrative arc.”
Julian stumbled out from the bushes, his camera rig trembling in his hands. “Clarissa! Look at the dashboard! We’re breaking platform records! The toddler-in-jeopardy trope is outperforming the abandoned puppy series by three hundred percent!”
Clarissa didn’t look at him. She walked directly toward Leo, who shrunk back against the plastic handlebars of his cart. She stopped two paces away and crouched down, studying the toddler’s tear-stained face not with pity, but with the cool scrutiny of an art collector inspecting a freshly unearthed antiquity.
“He’s losing the flush in his cheeks,” Clarissa noted, her voice flat. “The cold is dulling his skin tone. The lighting looks amateurish now. Bring the portable softboxes from the trunk.”
Leo stared at the woman’s manicured nails, which were painted an unnatural shade of chrome. “Are you the mama?” he asked quietly, his little voice hoarse from crying in the cold wind.

Clarissa paused, her eyes flickering for a fraction of a second. “No, Leo. I’m the producer. And your scene isn't finished yet.”
From the trunk of the counterfeit cruiser, a rhythmic knocking suddenly began. Someone was trapped inside.
