Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Trunk

The rhythmic thud-thud-thud from inside the trunk caused Vance to drop his phone onto the sidewalk. The screen cracked across the live follower count, splintering the digital numbers into jagged shards of light. He took two steps back, his face draining of whatever false courage had kept him standing tall.
“Julian,” Vance whispered, panic cracking his voice. “What did you put in there? You told me that trunk was full of lighting batteries.”
Julian’s face tightened. He looked frantically between Clarissa and the rear of the sedan. “It’s just... props. Atmospheric sound design. We put a low-frequency transducer inside to create ambient vibration for the rumble track.”
THUMP.
The sound was heavier this time, followed by a muffled, high-pitched gasp that could not have come from an audio speaker. It sounded like an animal—or another child.
Leo heard it. Despite his fear of the adults looming over him, his small ears picked up the sound of distress. To a toddler, the world was simple: when something cried, you checked on it. Leaving his blue shopping cart behind, Leo took three hesitant steps toward the rear bumper of the cruiser. His oversized yellow hood slipped back, exposing his messy blonde hair to the gusting wind.
“Stay where you are, 404,” Clarissa commanded sharply, using the code name printed on the production slate hanging from Julian’s neck.
Leo didn’t obey. He reached out with both mittens, slapping his palms against the cold, mud-spattered metal of the trunk lid. “Hello?” he called out, his voice small and clear against the hum of the city traffic. “You stuck?”

Inside, a voice whispered through the rusted seam of the trunk latch: “Leo... don't let them take your cart. The cart has the key.”
Before Leo could process the words, two crew members in black vests grabbed the toddler under his armpits, lifting his kicking legs off the pavement.
