Chapter 9 - Lessons on the Water
With the threat of litigation extinguished, the estate settled into an unfamiliar, sunlit rhythm. Arthur took a temporary leave of absence from the daily operations of the company, leaving trusted captains to oversee the shipping lanes.
On a warm Saturday morning, Arthur drove Clara and Lily down to the wooden docks of the old municipal marina. Bypassing the gleaming multi-million-dollar motor yachts, he led them to the far end of the pier where an old twenty-four-foot wooden sloop bobbed gently in the tide.
"This was mine before the war," Arthur said, looking at the weathered teak deck. "My grandfather built her with his own hands. No fiberglass, no radar. Just oak, brass, and canvas."
Lily ran her fingers along the smooth wooden gunwale. "Can she float?"
"Better than the modern ones," Arthur laughed, scooping her up and swinging her onto the deck. "Here, put this on." He buckled a small orange life vest around her chest.
Clara stepped aboard cautiously, the gentle rocking of the vessel under her feet bringing back memories of the coastal ferry she had taken as a child.
"Cast off that bow line, Clara," Arthur said, pointing toward the cleat.
For the next four hours, the world of boardrooms, tabloids, and family betrayals disappeared behind the white curl of the wake. Arthur taught Lily how to read the wind by looking at the ripples on the harbor surface, his large hands guiding her small ones on the wooden tiller.
"When a wave hits you from the side, what do you do, Captain Lily?" Arthur asked.
"You turn the nose into it!" she shouted over the snapping sail, her face glowing with delight.

"Exactly right," Arthur smiled, looking across at Clara, whose hair was whipping wildly in the sea breeze.
For the first time in seven years, Clara was not looking over her shoulder. She tilted her face up toward the sun, closing her eyes, letting the salt spray mist over her skin. She had spent her entire youth surviving the storm; now, she was finally learning what it meant to travel with the wind.
