Chapter 12 - The Highway Ambush

The state highway maintenance depot on Route 9 was dark when Tommy and Liam arrived, dragging their feet through the gravel lot. Tommy collapsed against the locked chain-link fence, his strength completely exhausted. His body temperature had plummeted, and his vision was tunneling into gray static.

""Tommy! Don't sleep!"" Liam shouted, slapping his small, freezing hands against the officer’s pale cheeks. ""Wake up! The trucks are coming!""

Through the dense morning fog, the rhythmic wail of sirens cut through the mist.

Tommy forced his eyelids open. Approaching down the two-lane highway was the prison convoy: two lead cruisers, the heavy armored transport van, and two rear security vehicles. It was moving at high speed, rushing Marcus toward his staged demise.

""This is it..."" Tommy muttered, struggling to stand, his legs buckling beneath him. He reached into his pocket for the polaroid, but his frozen fingers couldn't grasp it; the paper slipped, fluttering into a puddle.

Liam didn't wait.

The four-year-old boy, fueled by an instinct purely forged from love and terror, squeezed through an eight-inch gap in the chain-link fence. Clad in his muddy, soaked military jacket, holding Miller’s silver police badge high above his head with both hands, he ran directly onto the center line of the highway.

""STOP!"" Liam screamed into the blinding glare of the approaching cruiser headlights. ""STOP FOR MY DADDY!""

The lead cruiser’s driver saw the sudden shape in the fog at fifty yards. Tires locked instantly. The cruiser fishtailed violently across the slick asphalt, smoke pouring from shredded rubber as the siren screamed. The heavy armored van behind it swerved hard to avoid a rear-end collision, jackknifing across both lanes before slamming into the guardrail with a deafening metallic roar.

The convoy ground to a chaotic, smoking halt in the middle of the highway.

Doors flew open. State troopers and county deputies spilled out onto the road, weapons drawn, scanning the treeline for an ambush.

""Hold your fire!"" a trooper shouted, pointing down at the center of the asphalt. ""It’s a child! There’s a kid on the road!""
