Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

The alarm screamed through the corridors, deafening and disorienting. Red strobe lights bathed the concrete in blood-red pulses. Miller reacted instantly, scooping Liam under one arm and thrusting his shoulder against the heavy fire door. It resisted; the magnetic locks had engaged automatically upon system trigger.

""Code Black!"" a voice barked through the ceiling speakers. ""Breach in Holding Cell Block C! All units lock down the perimeter!""

Miller knew what that meant. Someone had deliberately tripped the primary fire suppression grid. In a facility like this, a Code Black didn't just lock exterior doors—it engaged automated cell ventilation, flooding designated corridors with halon gas to snuff out potential riots or fires.

""Hold your breath, Liam!"" Miller ordered, pulling off his navy service jacket and wrapping it completely around the child’s head. ""Don't inhale, no matter what happens!""

Through the thick observation window of the security door, Miller looked back toward the holding cells. White chemical vapor was already hissing from the ceiling grates, pooling on the floor like a creeping ocean. Inside Cell C, Marcus was throwing his weight against the heavy steel gate, his eyes wide with horror as he realized his son was trapped on the other side of the corridor.

Marcus couldn't speak; the chemical fog was already suffocating the cell block. He pointed frantically toward the electrical panel mounted beside the utility alcove where Liam had been hidden seconds earlier.

Miller understood instantly. The auxiliary power switch had a manual bypass lever installed by the maintenance crew during last winter's renovations. If tripped, it would release the electronic latch on the cell block doors for precisely twelve seconds before the backup generator took over.

Carrying Liam close to his chest, Miller dashed through the thickening mist toward the panel. The gas burned his nostrils and stung his eyes. He reached out, his service knife slicing through the plastic inspection seal, and yanked the master disconnect downward.

A loud clunk reverberated through the iron framework.

The sliding gate of Cell C groaned and drifted open six inches. Marcus lunged forward, coughing violently, his shoulder slamming into the steel to force it wider. He fell onto his hands and knees in the hallway, drawing ragged breaths of dirty air.

""Take him!"" Marcus wheezed, grabbing Miller's ankle. ""Don't worry about me—get Liam outside!""

Before Miller could haul Marcus to his feet, a shadow emerged from the end of the vapor-filled hall. A figure wearing a full tactical gas mask stepped through the fog, leveling a twelve-gauge shotgun directly at Marcus’s head.
