Chapter 15 - The Final Route

The morning sun broke through the heavy industrial fog of Blackwood, casting warm golden rays through the skeletal iron arches of the ruined Glassworks.

Thomas sat propped up against the giant front tire of Arthur's green bus, a clean white field dressing pressed tightly against his bleeding shoulder. Two city ambulances and a convoy of real state police cruisers filled the factory floor, their red and blue cherry lights sweeping silently across the ash-covered concrete. The mercenaries sat handcuffed in the back of secure patrol vans, surrounded by federal agents holding the ledgers Marcus had preserved.

Marcus Vance stood ten feet away, his arm wrapped tightly around Sarah, who was wrapped in a yellow emergency blanket, drinking water from a plastic cup. Her eyes, filled with tears of profound relief, never left their daughter.

Lily was sitting on the lowest step of Arthur’s bus, swinging her dusty pink sandals. She held a warm paper cup of hot chocolate, carefully blowing on the surface just like Thomas had shown her at the depot.

Marcus walked over to Thomas, stepping slowly, the weight of six months of terror finally lifting from his broad shoulders. He crouched down beside the old driver, his voice thick with unspillable emotion.

""They told me a transit driver brought her across the county lines,"" Marcus said softly, reaching out to grasp Thomas’s uninjured hand with a grip that shook with gratitude. ""There are no words in this world for what you gave back to me, Thomas.""

Thomas offered a faint, tired smile, looking past Marcus to where Lily sat safely in the morning light.

""It’s just my route, son,"" Thomas said quietly, his breath steadying as the paramedics approached with a stretcher. ""Nobody rides without a destination. She had a ticket to see her father.""

Lily looked up from her cup, her hazel eyes bright and clear, the terror of the night washed clean away by the morning sun. She stood up, trotted over to Thomas, and carefully pressed the shiny brass washer into his open palm.

""For your next bus, Mister Bus Man,"" she chirped.

Thomas closed his fingers around the cold brass token, looking toward the horizon where the sun was finally chasing away the longest night of his life. But as the paramedics lifted him onto the gurney, his transit radio on Arthur’s dashboard suddenly crackled to life with a message that made the hair on his arms stand up:

All regional units, emergency broadcast: Unknown vehicle approaching Blackwood hospital perimeter. Intercept immediately."
