Chapter 2 - The Silent Ring

The beam of Thomas's pocket flashlight cut through the stale, shadowed air of the maintenance hallway. Lily held tightly to two of his fingers, her small sandals shuffling against scattered paper and broken tiles. The vibration was coming from behind the half-ajar door of the women's facility.

""Mama?"" Lily called out softly. The echo of her high-pitched voice bounced off the cracked porcelain tiles, sounding frail and lost.

""Stay right here by the door, Lily,"" Thomas said firmly, though his pulse hammered against his ribs. He pushed the heavy wooden door open with his elbow.

On the stained sink counter lay a battered leather handbag, spilled open. A cheap burner phone vibrated violently against the ceramic basin, the screen flashing an unsaved number: UNKNOWN CALLER. Beside it lay a child's blue cardigan, a half-empty baby bottle, and an open envelope.

Thomas stepped closer, leaving Lily at the threshold. Inside the envelope was a stack of folded twenty-dollar bills, a laminated birth certificate for Lily Vance, and a single handwritten note on torn legal paper. The handwriting was jagged, pressed so hard into the paper that the pen had torn through the fibers:

Whoever finds her, put her on the midnight bus to Blackwood. Marcus knows she is coming. Tell him they found the apartment. I have to draw them away. If he doesn't take her, no one can protect her.

A sharp click echoed behind him. Thomas turned his head toward the back stall. The floor beneath the rusted metal partition was clean, but the rear emergency exit door was unlatched, swinging open into the dark alleyway behind the terminal. A cool draft swept in, carrying the scent of rain and crushed gravel.

Suddenly, the phone on the sink stopped buzzing. A moment later, a text alert chimed. Thomas leaned down to read the glowing screen: We have Sarah. Hand over the girl or Marcus dies first.
