Chapter 2 - The Silver Raven

The sight of the silver insignia instantly drained whatever bluster Julian Vance had managed to summon. He dropped the small chrome-plated derringer onto the floor; it slid across the slick marble with an ugly metallic clatter, stopping harmlessly against Diana’s bare foot. The gala guests, accustomed to polite scandals and quiet boardroom assassinations, panicked. Shrill screams echoed against the vaulted ceiling as men and women scrambled toward the decorative alcoves, knocking over ornate flower arrangements and gold-rimmed glassware.

Diana did not run. She scooped Lily entirely into her arms, pressing the girl's face into the emerald fabric of her dress so the child wouldn't see the weapons. “Cover your ears, sweetheart,” Diana whispered softly, her tone entirely transformed from lethal executioner to gentle guardian. Lily obeyed, burying her tiny fingers beneath her blonde curls.

The lead tactical operative stepped forward. His combat boots clicked rhythmically against the stone, contrasting sharply with the tuxedo-clad chaos surrounding them. He raised the dark visor of his helmet, revealing scarred cheekbones and eyes that had seen far too many battlefields. “Lady Diana,” he said, his voice flat, modulated by training. “The Patriarch sent us to extract you. The estate is already compromised.”

Diana’s jaw tightened. She had spent seven years running from her father’s shadow, trading the violent underworld of the Sterling Syndicate for the superficial veneer of galas and charities just to give Lily a peaceful childhood. Seeing Marcus Cole standing before her meant the delicate illusion had not merely cracked—it had disintegrated entirely.

“I didn't ask for his protection, Marcus,” Diana replied, standing tall despite the awkward weight of her child in her arms.

“He didn't offer protection, ma'am. He sent an evacuation order,” Marcus replied curtly. He raised a hand, and two operatives immediately flanked Diana, their rifles angled toward the ceiling. “Julian Vance was merely the match. The fire was already laid beneath you. Vance wasn't here tonight to mingle; he was sent to confirm Lily’s existence.”

On the ground, Julian began to laugh—a wet, rattling sound that turned into another coughing fit. “You think... you think you can just walk out?” Julian sputtered, wiping blood from his split lip. “The whole city knows who she is now. My father... he’s already closed the exits, Diana. You aren't leaving this district alive.”

Marcus raised his sidearm without breaking stride, aiming directly between Julian’s eyes. “Command cleared all obstacles, ma'am. Shall I?”

“No,” Diana commanded sharply. Marcus paused, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. Diana looked down at the pathetic man on the floor, her eyes devoid of mercy. “Killing him here is too clean. Let his father know that if he wants the girl, he will have to bring an army.”

Marcus nodded once, lowering his weapon. “To the underground garage, now.”

They moved in tight formation toward the service exits, bypassing the screaming crowd. But just as Marcus kicked open the steel fire doors leading to the subterranean levels, the emergency klaxons began to howl, and the ceiling sprinkler system erupted, dousing the burning chandeliers in cold, torrential spray.

From the dark stairwell below, the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots echoed upward, accompanied by the distinct metallic click of dozens of assault rifles chambering rounds.
