Chapter 10 - Courtroom Ambush

The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4B swung shut, sealing out the buzzing corridor. Judge Robert Harrison sat high on the bench, his thinning grey hair and stern, impatient scowl commanding the room.

"We are here on an emergency petition for temporary physical custody filed by Mr. Marcus Sterling," Judge Harrison began, barely looking at the documents before him. "The petitioner alleges maternal instability, immediate flight risk, and unlawful removal of a newborn infant from the marital jurisdiction. Mr. Sterling's counsel, you may speak."

Marcus’s lead counsel, an elderly, slick attorney named Vance Sterling—Marcus's uncle—stood up smoothly.

"Your Honor, Mrs. Sterling, suffering from apparent severe postpartum distress, abandoned the marital residence hours after giving birth, taking the newborn child Clara without her father's consent. She has relocated to an undisclosed, insecure coastal property that was recently subjected to a violent home invasion—putting this fragile child in direct, lethal danger. We request immediate physical custody be remanded to the father, pending a full psychiatric evaluation of the mother."

Judge Harrison nodded along, his pen hovering over the order. "A compelling and deeply concerning narrative. Mr. Cross, what possible justification does your client have for placing an infant in such peril?"

Julian Cross stood up calmly, adjusting his cuffs. "First, Your Honor, my client’s name is Elena Hayes. Second, the home invasion Mr. Sterling’s counsel so colorfully describes was orchestrated by a private security operative hired through an LLC directly traced to Vanguard Capital—Mr. Marcus Sterling’s primary executive vehicle."

Marcus let out a derisive scoff. "That’s slander, Your Honor! Absolute lunacy!"

"Quiet, Mr. Sterling," Harrison barked half-heartedly. "Mr. Cross, these are wild accusations without substantiation. I am inclined to grant the petitioner's motion—"

"Before you do that, Your Honor," Julian interrupted, his voice ringing with thunderous authority, "I would like to introduce into the record an amicus intervention from the Department of Justice."

The double doors at the back of the courtroom flew open with a loud thud.

Four armed Federal Marshals stepped in, followed by a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored black suit carrying a sealed leather portfolio. Marcus’s smug expression dissolved instantly into bewilderment.

"What is the meaning of this?" Judge Harrison demanded, his gavel hovering in mid-air. "This is a closed family court hearing!"

"Special Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division," the woman announced, walking briskly past the bar to hand a document directly to the court clerk. "Your Honor, we are executing a federal seizure warrant on all assets belonging to Marcus Sterling, Vanguard Capital, and its shell affiliates. Furthermore, we have an active arrest warrant for Mr. Sterling for sixteen counts of wire fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit money laundering."

Marcus leapt out of his chair, knocking over his water glass. "What?! This is insane! Uncle Vance, do something!"

Vance Sterling looked at the federal seal on the papers, his face turning an ashen grey. He slowly closed his briefcase and stepped away from his nephew.

"Mr. Sterling," Agent Miller said, turning to face Marcus as the Marshals surrounded the defense table. "Put your hands behind your back."
