Chapter 2 - The Heartbeat Alone

Consciousness returned in fragmented pieces: the sterile smell of antiseptic, the rhythmic beep of monitors, and a dull, throbbing ache radiating across her lower abdomen. Elena blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights, her throat parched and raw.

"Elena? Can you hear me?"

A woman with silver-streaked hair and warm brown eyes leaned into view, adjusting the intravenous drip above the bed. Dr. Sarah Vance, the OB-GYN who had guided her through nine months of lonely appointments.

"My baby..." Elena’s voice was barely a raspy croak. Her hand instinctively drifted toward her flat, bandaged stomach, panic flaring like an electric shock. "Where is my baby?"

Dr. Vance’s expression softened immediately, a gentle smile lifting the corners of her eyes. "She’s in the nursery, resting comfortably. A beautiful, healthy baby girl. Six pounds, eight ounces. You had an emergency C-section due to cord compression, but she came through with flying colors. You did amazing."

Tears, hot and long-overdue, spilled over Elena’s temples and into her hair. A girl. She had given birth to a daughter without the man whose last name she carried standing by her side.

"Can I see her?"

"Right away," Dr. Vance nodded, signaling to a nurse waiting near the door. Moments later, a clear acrylic bassinet was wheeled into the room.

Elena struggled to sit upright, ignoring the sharp tug on her surgical incisions. When the nurse gently placed the warm, swaddled bundle into her arms, the entire universe collapsed into that single, fragile point of contact. The baby had a dusting of dark hair, velvety soft cheeks, and long, delicate fingers that immediately curled around Elena’s index finger.

"Clara," Elena whispered, pressing her lips to the newborn’s warm forehead. "Your name is Clara."

"The father?" Dr. Vance asked gently, pointing with her pen toward the blank birth certificate form on the bedside clipboard. "We need his legal information for the registry before discharge."

Elena looked down at Clara's peaceful face. She remembered the dismissive flick of Marcus's wrist, the bills fluttering onto the counter, and the chilling realization that he had never viewed their child as anything more than a decorative accessory for his curated lifestyle.

"There is no father to list," Elena said, her tone level and unyielding.

Dr. Vance paused, raising an eyebrow slightly, but saw the resolute steel in the young mother's eyes and nodded silently. She took the clipboard back.

Elena spent the night cradling Clara against her chest, letting the infant’s steady breathing anchor her soul. Around 6:00 AM, the quiet sanctuary of the recovery room was shattered by heavy, hurried footsteps outside the door.

The door swung open with aggressive force. Marcus stood in the threshold, still dressed in his tailored suit, his tie loosened and hair slightly disheveled, his jaw clamped shut in barely suppressed fury.

"What the hell is the matter with you, Elena?" Marcus hissed, stepping into the room. "Why did my accountant call me saying you canceled my supplementary cards at two in the morning?"
