Chapter 1 - The Broken Façade

The ballroom stood frozen in stunned silence. Crystal chandeliers cast sharp reflections across the polished white marble, illuminating the blue-and-white shards of the antique vase. Victoria Sterling lay tangled amid the floral arrangements and scattered candles, her diamond necklace glistening erratically with every ragged breath.

Marcus held his two-year-old daughter, Lily, tightly against his chest. Lily’s small hands clung to the lapels of his charcoal tailored suit jacket, her tearful face buried into his neck. Under his other arm rested the thick yellow manila envelope pulled from beneath the shattered pedestal.

Across the room, the guard Marcus had thrown was groaning, slowly pushing himself off the shattered glass display. Guests in black ties and designer evening gowns backed away, exchanging shocked whispers. None of them had ever seen Victoria Sterling look anything less than invincible.

Victoria dragged herself to her knees, trembling with uncontrolled fury and sheer panic. “Give that back to me, Marcus,” she rasped, her poised accent slipping into desperate aggression. “You have no right to touch private property in my house.”

“Private property?” Marcus took a measured step toward her. His voice resonated through the vaulted hall with calm authority. “A minute ago, you told my daughter she was worth less than a piece of porcelain. But you weren’t protecting family heirlooms, Victoria. You were hiding evidence.”

Victoria’s eyes darted toward the towering mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom. Two more armed guards entered, locking their sights on Marcus. Marcus didn’t flinch. Instead, he slipped his thumb beneath the sealed flap of the envelope and tore it open just enough to glance at the first embossed header inside.

A cold smirk crossed Marcus’s lips as his eyes scanned the printed ink. He looked back down at Victoria, whose face had turned utterly bloodless.

“You didn’t just forge my late wife’s will,” Marcus murmured, loud enough for the front row of elite guests to hear. “You signed her death warrant.”

Before Victoria could reply, the lights across the entire mansion abruptly cut out, plunging the grand ballroom into total darkness.
