Chapter 15 - The Dawn on the Harbor

Victoria looked down at the glowing screen of her private phone. Her face shifted through disbelief, absolute horror, and finally complete despair.

Across the harbor, sirens filled the night air—not the local police units under her payroll, but a convoy of black federal vehicles roaring across the suspension bridge with flashing blue strobes.

Frank broke from behind his truck, taking advantage of the stunned mercenaries to disarm the two nearest guards. The rest of the private contractors, realizing their contracts had just become criminal death warrants, lowered their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.

Victoria stood alone in the rain, the umbrella slipping from her numb fingers onto the wet asphalt.

Marcus descended the tower ladder, his suit soaked through with rain and soot, his left shoulder bleeding freely. But his hands did not shake as he approached Nathan and reached out for Lily.

“Daddy safe?” she whispered softly.

Marcus pulled her tight against his heart, feeling the warm, steady rhythm of her breath against his neck. The rain began to soften, yielding to the first faint gray light of dawn breaking over the harbor waters.

“Yes, Lily,” Marcus whispered, closing his eyes as the weight of two years of grief, fury, and fighting finally lifted from his chest. “We’re safe now. Mommy can finally rest.”

Below in the alley, federal agents swarmed the perimeter, pinning Victoria against her vehicle and reading her rights into the dawn mist. Marcus walked down the stone stairs into the daylight, carrying the only treasure that had ever mattered."
